As the only photograph we have is of her dead with her throat cut, it's hard to say. She could have looked rather fetching. And as a char she may well have had the feather duster!

Sadly, at the time, any homeless woman was deemed to be an unfortunate. Indeed, any woman who had separated from her husband was considered no better than she should be. Unless she happened to be rich, in which case she was an eccentric.

Well I would prefer to have more data before doing so. Nevertheless, she was effectively homeless. With no steady work that is known. She was apparently in some sort of relationship with a man who was also without steady employ and as homeless as she. I would say it is a reasonable possibility that she engaged in prostitution when needed.

I'm willing to believe that ANY of the victims may have been quite attractive in their teens or early 20s, say. Before they lost their teeth and developed hygenic or malnutrition problems.

Probably more appropriate to give 'Marie Jeanette' the French maid's outfit, and Liz can have the Swedish maid's (is their REALLY a difference?). Polly or Annie can be the English (twins?) and Kate can be Scottish. Non-canonical: Alice is another Scot and I'll have to think about the others.

Joking apart, several of the victims, including Polly and Liz were said to look younger than they were. Liz' age was estimated to be around 35, I believe, when she was found.

Talking uniforms I think the french maid has it - Swedish one was much longer in the skirt :-)

I wonder....

What if Eddowes was an occasional solicitor and upon returning from a failed hopping excursion she was how you say sent out to get money? Hence the drink. Kelly gave her money for drink so it would be easier to deal with. She gets drunk and winds up in jail. Worried about being late and broke she goes on the hunt so she isn't empty-handed upon seeing Kelly again. Something I find funny is that everyone assumes Kidney was abussive but Kelly is a gentle creature. I wonder if it isn't maybe the other way around? Just prattling on.

I am going to GUESS that he was sweeping the floor or some other casual labor for the nightly doss and he meant that he was having no luck finding regular, steady "work".

(What's the likelyhood that that he was a MALE prositute? How many gays or cougars were 'slumming' Whitechapel streets?)

I wonder how long we can continue this before one of your stalkers arrives? Digressing, fine question. Perhaps that may be a check in the soliciting box? Before her murder she had been making money and Kelly how you say, holding onto it for safe keeping. Maybe he had other ladies who's money he held? Still just prattling on.

Same here! Been holidaying in the Baltic. (well, not IN it exactly!)

What I meant was that the definition of a prostitute was much broader then. I believe only Liz had been arrested (and only once) for soliciting - in England, that is. In Sweden at the time, due to laws introduced to prevent the spread of STDs, a woman could be registered as a prostitute for having a child out of wedlock or even for having no fixed address.

Of all the victims only Mary Kelly fitted the bill as a working girl - led astray while young, move to high-class brothel and then gradually sliding down the slope as she grew less attractive until she ended up as a street prostitute.
