The laugh a minute stuff in the Scotland Yard suspects file regarding MrS (aka Sudden Death ho ho ho) with pantomime buggery in hospital wards etc throws up a couple of interesting facts. One is that Stephenson was living in a lodging house at #29 Castle Street in the St. Martins Lane area in 1888.

Here's an 1880s map showing Castle Street. It's in the bottom right quarter, just north of Long Acre.


Castle Street is now called Shelton Street


Here is today's #29 Shelton Street, the building beyond the drainpipe. The red doorway is 29B, the one to its left 29A. So this is a photo of where Stephenson was living in 1888, for what it's worth.

The Prince Albert pub had the address 5 Upper St Martins Lane. This is what is now 7 Upper St Martins Lane, looking like it could once have been a pub. If it was then it would have been the first pub Stephenson came to at the end of Castle Street where he was living in 1888.

Does anyone have an ordnance survey map that shows a PH at this location, ie the junction of Upper St Martins Lane, Tower Street and Litchfield Street?

Very many thanks for that. So it looks like The Prince Albert pub was the one directly below where it says 'urinal' on the second map and therefore that's my theory down the urinal as I was thinking it was two doors up. By the way, Stringfellows Club (these days) is directly between the two PHs on the right hand side of the first map.

Thanks again, Rob. Yes that definitely places the Albert which isn't there now. The building I thought it was (#7) used to be a Chemist's shop. The listings for Castle Street are a surprise. For instance the odd and even numbers, north and south side of the street are reversed and no lodging house is mentioned. Do you know if there was a Castle Street in the Houndsditch area? All this Stephenson stuff is very confusing.

Hi Stephen,

Not all Lodging Houses were mentioned. I don't know what the criteria was to get your name in. None of the lodging houses in Dorset Street are in there, but I found some mentioned in Poplar.

There was a Castle Street that ran off Houndsditch. It was renamed Goring Street between 1888 and 1894. Its still there today, at least the layout is as I think it is mostly modern offices like the rest of Houndsditch.

Here it is on the 1873 large scale O.S. Map. about middle left.
Cuttler Street is still there by that name.

Castle street was actually renamed Goring Street in March 1885, which makes it interesting that D'Onston referred to it by its old name.
