There must be a name for this type of thing but - those online news items that piques your interest but you have to either read the whole article or just scroll to the bottom before the article reveals the point (which is all that you wanted to know)

"Clickbait." The idea is they get so much credit from the sponsor for every click on a link. A lot of formerly free news sites are going that way (CNN, I'm Looking at YOU. Or rather, I'm NOT.). Even worse are the ones that require you to join their "Club" (for a fee, of course) to access anything worthwhile. (Science News)

Along the same lines, the local grocery stores now require you to join the "X Can Return club" and have the Officially Required Bags (TM) to return cans/bottles- when they take them at all. Of course, they still charge you the deposit.
