In all seriousness, it's a balancing act...

OTOH no one EVER has the right to violate anyone's person...

OTOH, everyone needs to have some common sense about safety and public appropriateness...

This doesn't mean women (or men...LOL) need to dress like nuns....However, some common sense like not walking in big city neighborhoods at 3:00 a.m. in your underwear, or even not in your underwear but unaccompanied is also a good idea...

Yes, in a perfect world we could all wear whatever we want wherever and at any time, and could walk anywhere without fear. However, that is not the case...nor will it ever be the case....

Yes, rape is primarily a crime of power...And in most cases what the victim is wearing vis a vis sexual assaults does NOT matter...UNLESS....you look at specific situations where a woman has been followed from a bar or club of some type...and then what she is wearing can come more into play...

I often hear from young women...we should be able to walk wherever we want to alone at any time....of course I agree with that! However, that's simply not reality. Fact.

Even though my daughter is 6 feet tall and EXTREMELY strong and physically fit (she can "upend" men her size and considerably bigger than her ), there are situations where she should NOT be/walk alone, and she is smart enought to know that...

That does not mean we can not strive to make the world into the one we wish to live in. Why should my friends have to dress the way others are comfortable with them dressing? They are not naked. They are in no way indecent. There is no reason they should not be working for a world where they have to worry about the one knuckle dragger urinating in the shallow end of the genepool who mistakes "clothes" for "consent".

There are unbalanced individuals out there, and in the society we live in which emphasizes sex to the extent that it does, where so called role models, brag about their heterosexual/homosexual affairs as though it was somehow laudable to act in that fashion.Where teenage girls mags (So im told) instruct girls in their early teens the right and wrong way to practice fellatio.Where one cant pick up a daily paper without having a pair of boobs leaop off of a page and strike one in the face.A society where "anything goes",A society which has lost its way and once prized principles like decorum ,modesty and decency have been thrown to the winds and are rarely in evidence any more.A society where the "modern" girl thinks that getting blind drunk, vomiting in the street ,then showing their a****ole to passers by is "cool".Now we have the lunatic fringe ,the groups of women who want to dress like sluts, act like sluts, probabley talk like sluts, but expect people to think they arent sluts.Maybe their message got lost in translation somewhere. Are they saying rape is evil and wrong? er.... we know that allready, and exactly what type of rape are they talking about? The masked man jumping out of the Bushes type?Or the leading the man on till the last second type, only then crying rape? To argue that dressing provocatively or "slutty" will not increase the risk of attack by some allready disturbed deranged person with violent fantasies about rape is plainly silly. That doesnt mean the woman deserves it,it merely means the "slutty "dresser should maybe decide whether or not to confine her exhibiytionist tendencies to private displays ,rather than public.......for her own safety.

If you expect an answer to the question what else can women do to prevent them becoming victims of rape – or any other crime- I would suggest listening to good advice given to them by the police for a start.

So why then to certain people say they wish to take the chance by dressing like a slut?
I think you are being paternalistic here, in deciding that there are are women out there who are asking for it.

Not of course the women who are raped by violent and evil people. Evidently we are talking about women who are raped by pacifistic do-gooders who were forced into behavior they would otherwise abhor by a short skirt, which has been considered fashionable since the 60s.

There is no study, there are no statistics, there is absolutely no reputable data out there to suggest that clothing affects victim selection. Clothing doesn't even affect the numbers for date rape. Alcohol does, delusional entitled thinking does, but not the length of a skirt, or the height of the heel.

If the police would like to give out actually useful, meaningful advice to avoid rape, by all means. We are absolutely all ears. If they want to blame the victim for behavior that 30 years of studies says absolutely does not affect victim selection, then that's just more misogynistic abuse heaped on women who already erroneously blame themselves.

I have to admit. It worries me a little that you honestly believe that women who dress like "sluts" (and how does one define that anyway?) play a part in their own victimization. It is clearly a rationalization.

Glyn - you are most welcome!

Tom....I have an assignment for you: Tomorrow, walk into your workplace wearing nothing but a bowler hat and a pair of 6 inch red patent leather pumps. You will also need to bring a a towel to put down on any chairs, benches, etc. you may sit on in deference to Public Health Codes. Explain to your employer that this outfit makes you feel really great about yourself and that you will be wearing it every day from now on. Let me know if you keep your job... (Oy.)

No Bob, you fail to grasp the point that I am almost a hundred percent sure most other casebookers have grasped.

You diminish yourself by continuing to be disrespectful about it.

Sorry i have to double take what I am reading here. Are you suggesting some rape victims are raped by violent and evil people, and those who dress in ways of which you don't approve are raped by the other kind of rapist, the kind, non-violent and good type of rapist???

In the instances you have quoted I cannot see any example of the victims doing anything that would make their attack more likely, therefore of course they are blameless.
What???? ALL - i repeat ALL - rape victims are blameless! The one to blame is the perpetrator, the rapist, not the victim. I sincerely hoped attitudes like yours towards rape had become extinct with the dinosaurs but obviously not. I dont care what a woman is wearing, that does NOT make her to blame for someone raping her.

In some weird fantastical utopian planet I can see that the way a women dresses would not have any bearing on the general population. However this is planet earth and not all people are perfect and amongst the population you have a percentage who believe the way a person dresses gives off a certain message. In just the same way certain people believe the colour of a person’s skin gives off a certain message.
No. If you listen to Errata, she has pointed out several times now that there is no correlation between rape and the clothes a woman wears.

And as for your leaving your car unlocked analogy, it doesn't work. The equivalent would be a woman not going out without a chastity belt, and how many of us wear one of those?

Why? Is that what you think the Slutwalkers were protesting for the right to wear? Have you mistaken "in breach of decency laws" for the "right for free expression"?

And do you have a problem for me wearing my cycle shorts and vest, which actually would be comparable to model for dress in question: Revealng with out leaving much to the imagination?

I have a suggestion, turn up for a Slutwalk in your suggested wardrobe and see if the walkers consider it a comparable model.

Well, if some people make judgements based on skin colour maybe we shouldn't try and change that either...

Or, you know, we could actually set about making a difference to try and make the world a better place rather than just suggest a woman has the right to wear what she wants, but if she gets herself raped it is her own irresponisble fault.
