Hi all,

We did not end up saying "Groovy" here after seeing the Sinatra special and the film IT HAPPENED IN BROOKLYN (I liked Frank and Jimmy Durante doing a duet of "It Has To Come From the Heart"). Nor did we start saying, "Ring-a-ding-ding". Mom just kept talking about being a bobby soxer and seeing Frankie at the Paramount live. She cut school with her cousin to do that!

I know the thread on Waterhouse and the tragedy of 1891 was on within the last two years. I just found a major account of it in one of Charles Kingston's books. I must have overlooked it.

I recently acquired the Dustin Hoffman film of the novel PERFUME. I plan to see one of these days. It certainly is subject matter for this board, as the killer (for his own twisted reasons) is killing young women around Europe.
But it has to deal with the sense of smell - a curious subject if ever there was one.

Jeff-Tomorrow is the tenth anniversary of Sinatra's death. He was sort of the first teen idol. My mom is 83 but was never a big Sinatra fan. Maybe she was a little too old at the time. I do remember one time though that we went to the movies to see The Man with the Golden Arm when my dad was at work. Her heartthrob was Charlton Heston. My dad is 88 and his was Ava Gardner so there's a Sinatra connection.

I keep thinking I'll rent Perfume but I always come across something else, so far at least.

Celesta-Yes, I think Juarez would be a worthy thread for you to start. I believe Pinkerton was real interested in it also. Here, I think I only have a couple of books that have brief accounts and I've seen the movie which isn't worth much regarding facts. The first time I heard of the case was on the TV news. I think the first detailed account I saw was a segment on the America's Most Wanted television program. You should be the expert when you get finished with that book.

Is it really 10 years?I guess it must be.Iwent to see Sinatra in London(not as a social visit of course but to what might have been his last series of engagements,im not sure) must have been 1990 period. He was a pale shadow of his previous self of course,was more like talking than singing....but Sinatra was still Sinatra...still got the programme somewhere,might be worth a sov or two.

The New Halloween should not even have been made. Zombie should have stuck with the original plan of making Halloween 9, or at least did a prequel. But not a prequel and call it a remake, which it most certainly was not.

I thought it was weird that when Halloween was in the theatres the reviews where generally positive, and praised Zombie for "respecting" the original etc. But as soon as it came out on video, the same reviewers tore him to shreds, claiming he was more concerned with squeezing in celebrity cameos than telling the story. Talk about a catch 22.

Hey Mags, Did they put extra footage in the Dvd? For the most part, I find that makes a film drag. When Lucas put all that extra footage in the original Star Wars, it ruined the pace of it, in MHO.

In the Directors Cut, the running time is actually shorter, with several long, un-needed scenes cut, in favour of short sharp shocks!

There is an horrific rape scene that was ommitted from the theatrical cut, were a couple of rednecks take a young female patient into Michael Myers Room, and rape her. Myers kicks there ass though, so you end up rooting for the bad guy!

My wife watched the Theatrical release from behind her coat, and the directors cut from behind a pillow!

Hi all,

I celebrated Sinatra's demise yesterday by buying the new postage stamp put out in his honor. The rule is that (except for U.S. Presidents) a famous American will not be allowed on a postage stamp until 10 years have passed since they died. This explains why, when they did the "Famous American" series of stamps in the 1940s the composers included three biggies (Foster, Sousa, and Herbert) but two forgotten ones (McDowell and Ethelbert Nevin - remember "Narcissa White...a figure of pure delight" or his best seller, "The Rosary), but ignored George Gershwin (died 1938!).*

*Of course, today, the series would have Scott Joplin, Aaron Coplan, Gershwin, Ives, and several more worthy than Nevin or McDowell (who is best recalled for the artist colony he founded in New Hampshire).

So it was proper time for Frank Sinatra - and the stamp is attractive. Oddly enough it is issued on its own (probably because Sinatra was more than an actor, but a major singer as well). Later this year the Hollywood Legends series will include a new one for Bette Davis, but Sinatra is not in that series - despite winning an Oscar for FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. Also, since the 10 year rule exists, Katherine Hepburn can't be on the Hollywood Legends series until 2014. Neither can Bob Hope (but Bing Crosby was one of five singers - with Nat King Cole, Ethel Merman, Esther Waters, and Al Jolson - in a set back in the early 1990s).

It's fun playing around with stamps - and wondering who can get on them and who can't. I was amazed to see Eadward Muybridge was one of several
major photographers honored in a series in the 1990s - he's one of the few men tried for murder in this country who actually got onto a stamp (he shot his wife's lover, and was acquitted by the so-called "unwritten law).

On the other hand, five years back, a number of scholars tried to get a stamp out in honor of the Calvinist theologian and philosopher Jonathan
Edwards (1703 - 1758). They couldn't get enough support. For that matter Edwards' grandson did not get honored on a postage stamp either yet - Aaron Burr.

Would just like to add that the alien in 'Predator' is by far the best depiction of an alien as I have ever seen. David Bowie in 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' , comes in second.
