  • Hi Celesta, the site was great I just didn't find that one picture.
It was nice to see such urban areas framed by such bizarre objects, and I have book marked it and will take another long look sometime.

We had crazy thunder, lightning, strong winds and a really heavy downpour about 2 hours ago, it was really strong!

I managed to pick up Thomas Toughill's new book Ripper Code, I will probably read it at weekend.

I also saw the entire Planet of the Apes collection on DVD for just £10, down from £50!! I snapped it up!!

I also got Planet Terror, and we are planning a double bill alongside Death Proof!!
    Regards Mike

      • Hi Gang,

Sounds like you guys are still getting blasted by the storm. Hang in there.

Stan, Five words a minute is something for me to aim for!

          Hi Stan,

There are worse things than New York trying to be Illinois. You are, after all,
          "the land of Lincoln". So...

my office has been guffawing about the entire mess - a tragedy for Mrs. Spitzer and their three daughters, but the arrogant idiot has built his own scaffold. For the last year he has managed to antagonize the entire state by his attempts at policy, his bungling of handling his staff (who got carried away with pursuing Republic State Senate leader Joseph Bruno*) and by
never bending from his self-image of rectitude. We just want him to go!

I don't think any Illinois governor was this bad.

*Mr. Bruno, in his way, is an arrogant person too, and up to last year pretty unpopular. But he gained popularity by the antics of the governor's staff in what was called "Helicopter-gate". They were claiming that Bruno was misusing his office by using state owned helicopters at public expense. Actually Bruno is facing a Federal probe of misusing his office regarding the
manipulating of the state pension fund to use a business that advised on investments in Connecticut - a business that Bruno is associated with.

Spitzer will be the third governor to leave office before the end of his term.
William Sulzer was impeached and removed in 1913 for corruption (look it up on the Wikepedia - he may have been framed by Tammany Hall). In 1943 Governor Lehman left a few weeks before the end of his term to become a U.S. Senator. He was replaced for the last six weeks of his term by Lt. Governor Charles Poletti (who thus had the shortest term of any New York State Governor. Now it's Spitzer. There is something about Governors who have names beginning with "S" and ending "zer" and New York State that is not very good!

          Best wishes,

          Jeff

          • Hi Jeff,

I don't know. Something like 3 of our last 5 governors have wound up in prison and our current one is being investigated right now as I understand it.

            • The UFO world is buzzing with quite a few mass sightings!

There was the Texas sighting we discussed before the crash and there have been two incidents in the UK were several people in different areas all saw the same thing.

I saw a show on TV the other night were a truck driver saw a craft bigger than a hpuse, he called the PD who went to investigate, after radioing the sighting in, the local PD's also reported it, it flew across the entire State and was seen by the PD an civilians!!

About 10 oclock last night, we were hit again, it was quite a bad thunder storm, then it was hail stone, then it rained, then there was the strongest winds we have had so far, my rear yard looks like a bomb site!!

We have strong double glazing but it was rattling in the winds, and none of us got much sleep!

              • To be completely accurate, 3 of our last 6 elected governors (Kerner, Walker and Ryan) went to prison after leaving office. We'll have to wait a see if the tradition continues with this current guy. One problem is that our governor and both our senators all thought in 2007 that they were going to be president in 2009.

Tonight, UFO Hunters is on so we'll get some more shots of people sitting around talking about thinking of doing some research about flying saucers.

Well, my recent trip to New Mexico has allowed me to add one more UFO to my list of personal sightings. It was late afternoon/early evening and the sky was totally cloudless. I was looking out my step-daughter's apartment windows and saw a white, irregularly-shaped, vaguely spherical thing scooting across the sky over downtown Socorro, NM. I estimated the thing to be less than a quarter of a mile away and less than 500 yards from the ground. It seemed to be rotating slightly, or at least fluttering and rippling in the high winds. I would guess that it was less than six feet in diameter - perhaps as small as three feet in diameter and consequently closer than I thought. My best guess is that it was a very large plastic bag from a shopping center, or an advertising balloon that had broken its moorings. I suppose that it could have been a weather balloon, but if so it was rather small and close to the ground.

No little green men involved, but still a startling sight to see over the buisness district of a small town. As an aside, Socorro was famous in UFOlogy back in the '50s or '60s for the sighting made by Police Officer Lonnie Zamora of an egg-shaped craft and two occupants. My wife, Lyn had lived in Socorro for several years during the '90s and was somewhat aquainted with the family of Officer Zamora, but as I understand the family avoided discussing the sighting with anyone by that time.

In a small park in the oldest downtown part of the city they have a large fragment of a cast iron containment vessel that was originally built for the Trinity atom bomb test. It wasn't used in the Trinity test, but it was placed near ground zero for one of the later test bombs - which blew it to bits - and you can see that this footstool-sized fragment was partly melted and much pitted by the blast.

On the drive back from NM to GA we passed one one the gates and access roads for White Sands Missile Range. The sign stated that the base itself was only five miles away from that gate. The desert is quite beautiful out there, and reminded me of photos of the surface of Mars, but with cacti, small trees, and shrubs. I didn't want to take my digital camera through the Atlenta Airport security, so I regret not having been able to take any photos during this trip. But still, it was "mission accomplished" all around - I got to fly in a pair of jet airliners on the trip out to NM, and I moved my step-daughter and the contents of her apartment 1550 miles back to GA by way of a rental truck. Long drive, very tiring, but the result is well worth the effort.

                    • Lonnie Zamora pretty much brought the classic saucer period that started in 1947 to an end. I believe he's still alive.

Actually, our route home took us right through downtown Roswell. I wanted to stop at the Crash Museum, but we didn't get into town until 8 PM or so. We did drive right past it, so I do know where it is now in case I ever get to go back. But when we rolled through everything was closed up for the night. I did get to see a couple of their parade floats that happened to be on display alongside HWY 380 East, though.

Thanks! I know I have the info here in hardcopy, but I wasn't going to go grab the book off the shelves to look it up. Marc & I've been busy laying down a floor and making doors for my oldest storage shed to protect Michelle's stuff from the weather. We just finished that job a few moments ago. It took us three days to do because I wasn't going to get in a hurry and wind up putting a strain on my healing left arm. All that's left to do on that now is to paint the plywood doors and pack as much stuff inside as possible.

I go back to the doctor on the 14th, at which time I'll try to get the doctor to write me a full release so that I can go back to work next week. Wish me luck! I'm very tired of being kept home because of the auto accident. I've healed just about as much as I'll ever be able to heal. Plus, going back to work will give me some much needed excersize that'll rebuild the muscles in my left arm.

                        • Vila,

From NM to GA is one long trip and I can only imagine how it was in a rental truck!

I hope you can get back to work soon. I know you are itching to get going.

The closest I got to the Roswell site was to White Sands National Monument. That was one of the brightest places I have ever seen! Pure white gypsum sand piled high in dunes. There was a guy with us, who was born in Roswell, and he was disappointed not to get to see the place again. The whole time I was there I couldn't keep my mind off the aliens!

I've seen those balloon UFO's, too. I saw one, turning on an axis, so that it faded in and out. It was bright orange, but even though it was quite high, we could still see that it was a balloon. It was obviously a very light weight object.

Hope the garden is going well; we have even started.

                          • Hi all,

I have to admit never having been in the western U.S. or Mexico, so I have not been to these sites. In fact I have only seen a few items that might have been UFOs but they could have been distant airplanes for all I knew.
No lights, no egg-shaped craft with two creatures in them. I lead a dull life.

I forgot how many of your governors ended up in the clink Stan. We haven't had that yet, but let's see how things turn out with now ex-Governor Eliot Spitzer. We have had corrupt governors. In 1874 they got rid of Governor
John T. Hoffman, the last Mayor of New York City to advance to the Governorship. He got there due to State Senator William Meagher Tweed of the city, and when Tweed fell so did Hoffman. By the way, Hoffman died in 1888. In 1910 the poisoner of William Rice (of Rice Institute fame), Albert Patrick, got a really early release from prison due to out-going governor John Dix (the second Governor Dix, not to be confused to the Civil War Era Governor). It was rumored that the second Governor was paid off for the pardon. In the late 1860s the Governor was Reuben Fenton, who once served a term in prison for theft. His rival in Republican state politics, Senator Roscoe Conkling, liked to bring up that fact.

Our Governors may not go to prison, but possibly they deserve to.

                            • Well, UFO Hunters was a rerun already. At least a new season of Ice Road Truckers starts soon.

In the mid 80s, I drove through New Mexico on my way to Phoenix and spent a couple of nights in Santa Rosa. I came within about 60 miles of Socorro and about 70 Miles of Roswell and didn't even think of the flying saucers, if fact, Roswell was still under the carpet at that time.
