I agree, he probably was a soldier - maybe one of two or more in the area ro even with Martha that evening/morning. But isn't it interesting how just one "fact" that doesn't follow the most probably line of reasoning could change the entire focus?

I think that he probabaly WAS a soldier. Whether or not he was the same soldier is another matter.
