I agree, he probably was a soldier - maybe one of two or more in the area ro even with Martha that evening/morning. But isn't it interesting how just one "fact" that doesn't follow the most probably line of reasoning could change the entire focus?

It goes without saying that Tabram was the first of the series, she has to be , or bang goes my 'Thirty nine theory'.. not to mention Paul Harrisons informant, allegedly a descendant of Joseph Barnett, who has the press cuttings of the killings [ allegedly from JB] from Tabram -Mckensie
