    Dear Lynn

Yup, that would appear to be the man we are after. Fantastic stuff, thanks for posting.
This is very important. We now have McCarthy's wife's maiden name - Stephens, and thus a new line of inquiry - hypothetically speaking, MJK could be a relative of Elizabeth's - the daughter of an older sibling (this doesn't work with John's siblings, as he is the eldest, and MJK, even assuming her youngest given age of, say, 21, would be too old).

So, we now have five possible strands:
    1) MJK was a cousin of John's via his father's side
    2) MJK was a cousin of John's via his mother's side
    3) MJK was a niece of Elizabeth via one of her elder siblings (if she had any)
    4) MJK was a cousin of Elizabeth's via her father's side
    5) MJK was a cousin of Elizabeth's via her mother's side

This is the first layer, if this comes up blank, then i suppose we move on to the next - grandparents, second cousins and all that... tally-ho chaps (and chapettes)!

      1881

Hello Dr. H. This is from the 1881 census. I believe the 1891 is posted already.

      Cheers.

        Elizabeth Stevens

Hello Dr H. Here seems to be Elizabeth from the 1861 census. Note the spelling of the cognomen.

        Cheers.

It's a real shame that some people here on Casebook upset the great-grand-daughter of John McCarthy and so she she walked away. And maybe taking all the answers to your questions.

Yeah but I'm not sure how we upset her. I came in at the end of that and never found out what happened. I always liked McCarthy for the Kelly murder and still do to some extent. If I recall correctly, he was at the Dorset St address for a long time after the murder.

                Hi,
As I have mentioned many times here on Casebook, I believe that we had the opportunety to hear some real gems from Fiona but alas no such luck.
                Regards Richard.

                  Hi Richard

                  I agree with you.

I am still in touch with Fiona. When this thread started I emailed her and asked a few questions this is her reply -

                  Re your casebook posting...

We (my family) do know that MJK wasn't related to Jack (or any of his clan of McCarthys). Neither was she his mistress.

Fiona was chased away from the boards by some septics who did not belive that she was who she was. ]I then managed to persuade her to come to a Whitechapel Society meeting. She proved to be a real winner. She brought along a great deal of family memorabilia - including the only known photo of John McCarthy.

So apart from the McCarthy family there are probably only 50 other people who now know what he looks like.

                    Hello Coral,
Even that reply from Fiona tells us a lot, and hopefully should clear up any suspicions, that McCarthy was anything more then just the landlord of Millers court.
Mayby over the years I have been guilty of being to trustworthy of some oral history, but in Fionas case, I truely believe she has many important unknown details to reveal.[ proberly unaware of importance]
Any family hand downs refering to this case, are extremely important, and should be encouraged, for the sake of clues that they may well present.
As you may realise, I am very much pro Fiona, and have been, from day one.
                    Regards Richard.

I suppose, too, that had she been related to McC, why hang around getting flung out of lodgings all round Spitalfields when she could have just gone to Uncle Jack for a room?
                      best,

Did she explain how the family had a photo of McCarthy, the circumstances behind it?

                          Hi Wickerman

She had the photo because she is John McCarthy's great-grand daughter!

Fiona also spouted nonsense about knowing who the killer was etc.

                              .

Just maybe she DOES know! She never got a chance to tell us any more than than what she did, so we've had no chance to prove or disprove. I've never forgotten her, something about the things she said just gave me a gut feeling.

Coral, didn't she say something about writing a book? Do you know if that will ever come to pass?

If she knew she'd write about it. No problems with libel at this late stage of the game and her credentials and family connections are great. I do remember her hinting that the family knew something etc etc.
