But what! The zigzag rooftops, the pointed roof and the carriage in the foreground: just Mr Diemschutz missing !

I have just checked my Lost London and the photo is Chapel Yard,1906. The stone plaques on the wall mark the boundary between the parishes of St Clement Danes and St Giles in the Field, so it is in Holborn.

Its an interesting photo for sure but I agree with the former posters, not Dutfields Yard. Although the general shape may have been similar I suppose. Its missing the cottages, perhaps behind the cart...the side door, offices and unused stables.

          Rough sketch

I remembered this sketch from our discussions about Dutfields Yard in previous years, obviously not to scale.

          Best regards,

            Project Turdburger

That makes the passage look more than half the width of the house, which of course it wasn't.

Hence the warning it wasnt to scale Tom. Just a rough outline of what was where. I believe it was 18 feet to the side door from the gates.

With the gates open, wasn't Liz only a foot or so from their innermost extent? That was my understanding anyway?

                  placement

Hello Dave. Good question. There were no fewer than four different placements.

                  1. About a foot (west). A PC who said she was just beyond the sweep of the gate.

                  2. About 2-3 feet (west). Morris Eagle.

                  3. About 9 feet (west). Doctor Blackwell.

                  4. About 15-18 feet (east of the rear door) (!). Issac Kozebrodske.

Actually, these may all be harmonised (believe it or not); and that puts Liz just inside the gates.

                  Cheers.

                        Thanks Hunter

Confirms what I thought...so she's ten feet or so (roughly) from the property boundary...not eighteen...

                          equivocations

Hello Dave. Thanks. Another good question. There may be some equivocation between "swing of gate" and "gate post." There is likely a second one between "feet" and "yards." (Dr. Blackwell and Isaac.)

                          Cheers.

                            18 feet

Hello (again) Dave. The 18 feet figure marks the distance from the side door to the gates.

                            Cheers.

                              Hi Lynn

Thanks...that too is what I thought...but alas it's not what the side-note on Mike's plan suggests...

                              All the best
