I took this of the pavement outside the WMD buildings on the oposite side in Goulston Street. I thought at the time that this was how it would have looked when they were built. I'm not to sure now. Just wish some plans had survived

      Rob,

I dont think that floor is original in your photo. I think you are bang on, Goulston Street had basemment wells.

It matches with the maps as far as Im concerned. And I cant see them flooring it over after just, what?, 8 years? (86 to 94).

No, no, no. I think the wells where part of the original design and one, in Johns photo (for which I could kiss him as Jake and I were totally flummoxed by what seemed to be a wall jutting out for no reason), survived at the front. The others at the back also survived.

      To me it makes sense.

Yeah, I agree. The filling in must have happened much later. Surprising there is no mention of the wells being searched or at least looked at.

                  Rob,

The piece Ive squared off. Ive always wondered why the building didnt run flush all the way down the street.

I suspect that some investigating is in order.

                      Quite Gareth.

Also how visible the wall writing was to the passing public, and the apron, after all you wouldnt have been able to walk right across the entrance.

I fear a new thread is in order, like we need another one. However, this one shouldnt be hijacked.

Im retreating to slumberous intentions....maybe tomorrow. Unless you wish to.

I'm sure I've got a photo somewhere from the same angle, I'll have a look.

I did a paranormal investigation a few years back in a building with a cellar and to light it up they had these glass floor tiles. They were flat on the top but the underside was like a "W" so the light could hit the top and be reflected or refracted into the room underneath.

Great during the day, but not so during the darker hours.

The building that had these had seperate businesses and living sections in the celler.
                            Regards Mike

Oh, I thought you were talking about something important then.

I remember us walking around the back. If you noted them you weren't sharing. This old postcard doesn't give much away, but I'll check in a couple of weeks.
