Could the plaque been brought from another location and set in the wall, as a reference to some part of the history of the business? Or have had some significance to the owners, for reasons unknown? Companies will do that sort of thing. It's like someone framing the first dollar they made in their business. You see that in small businesses sometimes.

It's quite possible. But how long it has been there, I know not.

I've just looked at John Rocque's detailed 1746 map and Fieldgate Street is a pathway leading into some fields (labelled 'White-chapel Field Gate') and Plumber's Row is called Rope Walk.

With regards to building materials being sourced from elsewere.

Yesterday I was looking into some of the old mills here in hull when I found a great story.

One mill was a victorian building, rather grand in ints size, because of this it was an obvious target for the luftwaffe as they navigated down the river hull, and was destroyed in the blitz.

During the cleanup operation they discovered that the windowsills were made from gravestones sourced from the nearby Holy Trinity Church!!

It appeared they were used as stones on the floor too!!!

Great little website, It's like taking a virtual tour through the area, minus the people looking at you!!

I must have passed about 95% of that without taking much notice, especially the "Elephant Man Sari Shop" but there were so many!!

I spent a while looking at the Royal London Hospital too but never took any notice of any fruit trees, too busy looking up at the large gates and trying to imagine a 40+ year old man jumping over with a leg full of gun shot!!

I did notice the Blind Beggar, and began humming "The Sun ain't gonna shine anymore" by the Walker Brothers!!

PS, the way I remember the place Merrick was shown is it is opposite the fountain.

As pretty much most of the road side of Whitechapel road was lined with market stalls, you would have to say "Its opposite the stall that sells Watches and watch batteries" but then that doesn't narrow it down!!

I like the "Good Samaritan" pub sign, looked like the photofit of jtr as Freddie Mercury!!
