  • There was a scientific test for blood in 1888. It just couldn't be determined if it was human blood or not.
This my opinion and to the best of my knowledge, that is, if I'm not joking.

    • If they'd tested the GSG wall for blood and found it, that would have pretty much proven that it was written by JtR but, yet again, probably another missed opportunity. Conversely, if no blood was found, it wouldn't have proven that it wasn't written by the Ripper but it would have been diminishing evidence.

      • I guess that building is gone now. It was still up in 1988 I believe.

If you mean Wentworth Model Dwellings, they are still standing.

Yeah I remember his book. He took a photo of them and said they were slum dwellings and took a photo of another building half way down Goulston Street and said this is where they stood.

Next time them. My chicken was so undercooked a skilled veterinarian could have saved it.

But no amount of persuasive chat could make the guy at the counter let me have a gander at the stairwell that remains in the basement...

                            • A few points

When I was studying for the New York State Bar exam in the late 1970s I knew a young married lady who came from Polish aristocratic stock. She claimed her grandmother was in Whitechapel in the autumn of 1888, and one night may have been looked over by a "strange man" who might have been the Ripper. The reason she thought so was that shortly after he looked her over and she walked away she heard a police whistle and people running to the location the woman had just passed. My informant did not recall what night it was. Third degree hear-say, but I still have the name of the woman who went to the bar review with me (but she probably does not remember me now).

That is my only Jack the Ripper anecdote.

A book about Dr. Thomas Neill Cream was published in the 1990s, and I wrote to the author (I think his name is Angus McLaughlin). He told me (when I wrote to him) that Cream has family in Toronto or Canada, but they really don't like talking about him (not somebody you recall fondly). Ironically, on Facebook, if you look up his Canadian alma mater, McGill (or M'Gill) University, they proudly show his photograph and who is (and supposed to be).

Yes, thanks Rob. In that 1988 production, the place looked on the verge of crumbling unless they had the wrong building.
