      Hi Lynn,

Us English and those Scots aren't really alike at all.

Compare the Church of England and the Church of Scotland: the former a half way house between Protestantism and Catholicism; the latter Presbytarian. The church has formed our respective cultures.

Scotland has had a fair impact on the United States.

And, Heinrich, give your head a shake son. You only think you know what you're talking about.

I personally favour Scottish independence, because succeed or fail the most important thing is to do it off your own back.

But, like it or not, the United Kingdom is one of, if not the, most successful unions in the modern world; of which Scotland has punched its weight and reaped the rewards.

And, there's nothing worse than a know nothing kraut who thinks he knows what he's talking about, pontificating about peace, harmony and good will to all men. You're only peaceful because you keep getting slapped down every time you get uppity.

Undoubtedly the envy of millions. The Irish must have been out of their minds to leave such political perfection.

            Presbyterians

Hello Mac. Would you be astonished if I said my Domini used the "Book of Common Prayer" for the sacraments? But it's true. He used to have a church in London.

And no, we Presbyterians don't have bishops--we call our bishops something else.

So those Prayer Book and bishops wars were love's labour lost.

So maybe the Scots and English converge a good bit after all?

            Cheers.

One difference between English and Scottish churchmen might be, the Scottish ones are actually interested in religion.

This is true. Before the Union we were a European backwater under the Monarchical beck and call of France for much of our history. We were hardly a proud and free nation even back then. Our country undeniably prospered and lead to Scotland's Golden age of Enlightenment and economic prosperity.

The Union has been a success. Let's see if our European brothers can emulate such a success. Only a few years in and its not looking so good.

                  Union

                  Hello Jason.

"The Union has been a success."

Hear, hear. Let's keep it that way. Besides, what would the Union Jack look like without the Cross of St. Andrews? (A: The cross of St. George.)

                  Cheers.

Plus St Patrick's Cross, surely, Lynn? (In case any foreigners are wondering about Wales, it doesn't get on the flag because it's a Principality.) Rather arcane stuff.

Hello Robert. Yes, but for how long?

Strikes me like breaking apart family.

                      Cheers.

Yes, it's sad, Lynn - and futile, since small countries will promptly be swallowed by Europe.

                          keeping current

Hello Robert. Quite true. And I needn't mention what the currency will be like--of little value.

                          Cheers.

                            Hi Lynn

Re the currency, I'm baffled by the SNP policy of keeping the pound. Surely one of the marks of an independent country is that it has its own currency.

Tell you what, mate: whatever we say on this message board you have never remotely been in our league.

The epitah of Germany will read: never have been; never will be.

And that's why you're feeding off the scraps in this conversation.

                                run away

Hello Robert. Forgive me, but it's like the teenager who runs away from home but wishes to bring his laundry for mum to do.

                                Cheers.
