I've always thought that the very fact that Ruby was allowed access to the basement, and shot LHO in front of the world's media, was proof enough that there was a conspiracy. It seems logical to me that LHO was killed to stop him talking.
LHO and John Wilkes Booth were both rather unhappy, unfilled individuals (even though Booth's career was somewhat more successful that Oswald's); both held radical political views; both were connected to radical politics.
Also interesting is that the authorities took immediate steps to deny a conspiracy in the case of JFK, but assumed right from the beginning that in Lincoln's case there was a conspiracy - they instantly rounded up anyone and everyone they thought might be involved.
Can't imagine LHO quoting Brutus when he shot JFK, though...
