  • Hi Gang,

My husband saw a documentary on Amelia just this past weekend. He said it was different than the usual ones, in that it went more into aspects that are usually glossed over. Maybe if you check the listings for last week, you can turn up which documentary he saw and see if it will be rerun. You know, sometimes the History Channel and PBS will rerun things. Just a thought. Not helpful to folks in Britain and beyond, I know.

    • Hi all,

I've discovered two things - she was more than a lady who liked flying. Ms Earhart was a determined feminist (a torchbearer for the movement) who lectured on how woman could do as well as men in any sphere. She was also a very effective social worker in the 1920s. Her family life was happy on the whole, but her father became a serious alcoholic, which effected the family's income (by the way, from her mother's side she was descended from the Otis family of Massachusetts.

The second thing I found is how much more I like her than say Charles Lindbergh, but she managed to appear as foolish most of the time.

      Best wishes,

      Jeff

      • Hi Jeff,

That recent documentary I saw tended to blame her loss on her pushy exploiting husband and her drunken navigator.
This my opinion and to the best of my knowledge, that is, if I'm not joking.

When I first saw that I thought it said "Flying saucer hot dog fights!"

Didn't Thomas Mantell die from chasing a saucer?

The air force later said it was venus, but when his plane was found, it looked like it had just been placed there!!

            Very strange!

            • Hi Mike,

Yes, the Mantel incident is an interesting one. There was also Lt. Moncla who vanished while chasing a UFO over Lake Superior in his F-89. Radar operators saw the two craft merge on their screens in 1953.

                  Hi Stan,

I have heard that Noonan was blamed for being a drunk (she had a sad, soft spot for drunks because of her father), but she was guilty of some bad judgments (such as rejecting some security items on the plane because she was trying to have more room for fuel). By the way, I meant to say that Earhart made less foolish mistakes than Lindbergh, but her last set on that trip may have helped kill her and Noonan. As for Putnam, the marriage was certainly not one of the great romances of all-time, but apparently she and George did appreciate each other's better points.

I heard of the Mantel incident (he crashed because in chasing the UFO he went up too high and it affected the pressure or air in his plane cabin so he blacked out). The incident with the Lieutenant over the Lake I have never heard of.

                  Best wishes,

                  Jeff

                  • Hi Jeff,

That documentary also claimed that Amelia wasn't as versed at using her radio as she should have been either. In the end though, until proven otherwise, I think you have to blame Noonan. It was his job to find Howland and he should have been able to but couldn't.

I'm watching UFO Hunters right now. It's sort of interesting.

                    • P.S.

Yes, the high altitude blackout is the "logical" explanation for Mantel.

The cases that they covered tonight were one that happened over Iran in 1976 and one that occurred over Peru in the 1980s.

In the Iran incident, the craft zapped the fighter with some sort of EMP weapon that fried his electronics and made it impossible for him to launch his missiles. The "diamond shaped" "mother ship" then expelled a smaller red sphere that followed him back to base and appeared to land some distance away but could not be found.

The Peruvian pilot actually fired on his UFO but it didn't seem to have any effect on the "acorn" shaped craft. The UFO then stopped in midair and began to pursue the fighter. It eventually broke off the engagement though.

                      • They are of no defence significance because we have no defence against them!!

I got some more rports regarding the Hull UFO yesterday, plus two more different sightings, of two different craft, with lots of witnesses to each one!!!
                        Regards Mike

Speaking of fighters, F-18s have been strafing my house all day. It must have something to do with Brown and the Pope being here.

That's pretty wild, Stan. Although I think it would be pretty cool. Noisy though.

I guess it tells me a little about the show. They're bound to show it again, I guess.

You know, I'm not so sure I like the approach these guys take. I would have liked to have seen more of the witnesses in the Texas show.
