I have attached a speech made by someone called Jack McCarthy who denounced an article claiming that Dorset Street is the centre of crime etc. The name McCarthy is a fairly common one for the time period but given the location and time period had me wondering whether he was related to John McCarthy?

Yes, they were. But Jack McCarthy, Esq. wasn't the Miller's Court landlord -- another McCarthy was. Although McCarthy Esq. supposedly owned three lodging houses on Dorset Street, he didn't own Miller's Court (Abraham Cohen did).

The Wiki entry has mixed up two different McCarthys. Information garnered from Fiona Rule's book should be viewed cautiously.

The Austin murder had taken place a few weeks before McCarthy made his speech and the attack had occurred on the 35, Dorset Street premises of McCarthy’s mate Bill Crossingham. Crossingham was in the audience when McCarthy spoke. It was almost certainly what motivated Fred Mackenzie to write his ‘Worst Street’ article.Originally posted by MrBarnett View Post

But he was someone who let out rooms with cheap furniture in them, wasn’t he?Originally posted by Scott Nelson View Post
The McCarthy who owned multiple lodging houses probably was and he was also the one who attended Abberline's retirement. I contend that this man wasn't the Miller's Court rent collector.
