Ive always took it to be the bottom pane.
How the hell did Barnett undo the lock through that?

I guess it is difficult to get a sense of scale (although I'm sure somebody out there has an idea), but any attempt to spring the latch from this hole would have appeared to require a very long arm.
Maybe it could have been done using a stick?

Its an odd configuration isnt?
The windows just do not match. I can understand if one was put in later I suppose, to give light to the room.
