The police would not place anything with the Star, the paper had made an enemy of authority by their constant criticisms and exaggerated claims. The Star often claim to present official opinion by their creative wording but at the same time they complain that the police will not talk with them. As a result (as I have often quoted before), the Star admitted the need to resort to "making it up as they go".
The Star would also copy stories from other media, both edit & reword them to make them more controversial. Truth was not their main concern, selling copy was.
Nothing is to be gained by using the Star as a source unless, either the same report appears in another paper, or they provide referrenced quotes, or at least name their source. In most cases they do neither, the Star is a very dubious source when taken in isolation.
Marshall's man was described as "middle-aged", one of your own sources (with ref. to the Packer story, Evening News Oct. 4), informs us that contemporary thinking had "middle-age" pegged at about 35, "The man was middle aged, perhaps 35 years;"
The killer was often described at between 28 & 40'ish, height's & ages cannot be accurately described, as always they are rough estimates.
