Hello Ben. Did you make a Fish pun just for the halibut?
Fraid so, Lynn, and the whiting is on the wall as far as Toppy goes.

And that's just the problem - the whiting still doesn't match!

    Yes, just to clarify, Maria:

If Michael Goldstein was a plumber in 1891 (as opposed to just "calling himself" one), he must have have been apprenticed and trained as one well in advance of 1888, and his work in the tin-industry must therefore have been a temporary venture when his main source of income had run dry. Plumbing apprenticeships don't start at age 35 and don't last a mere three years. The rules for entry into the plumbing trade had become stricter at that time, according to an article provided by Sam Flynn, in stark contrast to Mike's claim that the process was "already dying by the LVP". It has nothing to do with "science", by the way. It's just what the evidence tells us.

Have a bash at some fish puns instead, Mike.

    Best regards,
    Ben

      Ben:

"The logical deduction, therefore, is that Goldstein had a plumbing background prior to 1888, and that his "tin plate" job was merely temporary."

Logical deductions aside, yours as well as mine, it was strongly suggested back in the old days of the Crimean War on these boards that somebody who was a plumber would not play down his education and status by using an inferior title.

"He couldn't have started from scratch after 1888 to become a fully-fledged plumber three years later."

Then again, he may perhaps have educated himself alongside his tin job over the years ...? Not very credible, of course, but there you are. Or maybe he was just bragging as the census takers came along asking in 1891?

Or maybe things do not always follow straight lines?

      The best,
      Fisherman

"OK, even as a newbie I'm aware of the fact that Ben is a Hutchinsonian...
(But still unclear about the plumber part.)"

Not to worry, Maria - you are in good company!

          Mike:

"We both know that it's impossible for someone to have changed a career in the LVP. It didn't happen. And to become a plumber without a 125-year apprenticeship period which only began at 14 years old and not a day earlier or later, well that's flat out crazy. I have had a few cerebral giants tell me just this, and of course I can't argue against such brain power; such argumentativeness; such arrogance.
I'm afraid you're on your own on this one... like a fish out of water. But still, don't even think of looking for the plumber's signature. It would be forged."

Oh, sod it! Every time you think you´re on to something, some kill-joy always pops up and tears it down in flames ... There I was, perch-ed on the top of the world, hoping to have seen a true ray of light .. the tench-ion was unbearable. But I was just cod-ding myself, it seems!

And now, let´s take Toppy out of the equation, since it IS the wrong thread. So long, and thanks for all the fish...

          The best,
          Fisherman

yes, you are. Along with being rather shellfish, I might add.

Thanks, everyone. Now I know a little bit more about plumbers (apart from the fact that, when you desperately need them, they're as hard as payday to come by).
                  Back to Salmon Silver/silver salmon?

Hello Abby and Michael. Holy mackerel! What would London's greatest LVP preacher, Mr. Charles Sturgeon, have to say about this?

                    Cheers.

Joseph Silver was Jewish?! Is there anyone who isn't? My boss, my boyfriend of 3 years whom it took 5 months to finally get rid of (), ALL people I know in Chicago. Still, I'm having difficulties imagining a Jewish pimp.

Surprisingly, human trafficking in the Jewish emigrant community was big business with young emigres being induced into the profession upon arrival from Eastern Europe into England. Fishman talks about this a bit in his book on the East End Jews, and others have written articles about this happening all over the world, and the relative legitimacy of this practice. It is one of those hidden histories that have created a certain amount of wealthy families that are just finding out, with shock, about how great-grandfather Sal got the capital to start his Brighton development company (for example).

                          Cheers,

Another reason to be glad I'm not Jewish.

This thread and the recent discussion with Fish in the Stride and the grapes thread have rendered me so eager for fish, that I'm willing to splurge up to 40-€ at the Kdw fish section tomorrow. And I got some seriously yummy (and good smelling) seasonings from J-Bay in South Africa that go along. These things taste so good, that friends of mine were eating them from the box.
