Not really. Couldn`t see anyone in the 1881 Census in F&D street that could be him.

The chap you identified in the Infirmary records has to be him. I`ve only seen the Infirmary records for 1888, does he give his status as single in the entries you have seen for other years?

Hi Jon, yes, he is described as single in every entry.
There are a couple of other John Kellys and two different Mary Ann Kellys in the Whitechapel infirmary registers. The address of 14 F&D street (and other d.addresses) is given for two of them who seem to be a couple (maybe even the paternoster couple alhough they are older). The other Mary Ann is the widow of William and this is the one I think died in early 188 as I posed earlier in the thread.

Yes, the Whitechapel Infirmary admission and discharge records are on Ancestry and also available for free here for anyone who doesn't subscribe to Ancestry.

I was intending to try and produce a little summary of the different John and Mary Ann Kellys we've encountered and who they might all be-if only to stop confusing myself But I got distracted by Catherine Eddowes' having a healthy liver!
Maybe I can convince Jon to help me out with doing one.

I`d love to help but I`ve just started to drink myself to death.
There is a sealed envelope on the mantelpiece containing instructions that upon death my body is to be donated to The Ripperologist for a fully recorded post mortem. On one proviso that the weight of my brain is not disclosed.

Entry's are all in days, weeks, months, years, etc. Obviously it does not refer to length of stay, also we read "Belongs" (or at least it looks like that) as an entry.
Any ideas?

Hi Jon,

As I understand it-settlement refers to the parish an individual is legally settled in and therefore eligible for treatment/stay at that parish's infirmary, workhouse etc. (in this case Whitechapel Infirmary).

'Belongs' simply means belongs to the parish and eligible.
There are also settlement books kept by institution's and these show cases where settlement was in dispute and show what investigations were made about a persons history regarding work parish, parish of birth parish of residence,and more.

As examples-Hyam Hyam's wife and two children were removed from one parish workhouse and ordered to another parish workhouse because their settlement was judged to be in the parish that Hyams (he head of the household) had resided in most recently.

Also, with Joseph Fleming we seem him being removed from an asylum belonging to the City of London, to a another one after he is judged to have settlement in Bethnal Green-apparently not having done anything to establish settlement in the City.
