  • >>I would say the police had obviously looked into someone and cleared them if there was evidence that they had done so. There is no such evidence in Lechmere’s case. Being truly objective in these matters is not always easy.<<

I agree, which is why nobody should be claiming Cross wasn't investigated.

Necessity or a prudent saving measure to improve finances for a better financial future. Which is what it seems he did.

      Glass half full/ empty scenario.
What makes you think he did?

Did he start his own business before his mother died? That’s the mother who ran her own businesses and who was the beneficiary of her father’s will.

      This mother:

How does an index to Swanson's 6 page report to the home office reflect the extent of the police files?

Didn't he write in his "Stride" report,

"... other enquires respecting alleged suspicious persons continues and is numerous .There are now 994 Dockets besides police reports."

        • Lechmere’s mother and her two sisters were equal beneficiaries of their father’s will, from which they derived an income. On the 1891 census her two sisters were recorded as living on independent means. She at the time was running a cats meat shop. By 1901 she was running a corn chandlery. After she he died, her son started his own businesses.

Dr Strange (the man with the phobia of false names) would have us believe that CAL, a carman with a large family, saved his pennies and was able to start his businesses without any help from his mother.

That’s the way it ‘seems’ to him.

Since there is no mention of the hunt for and questioning of Paul in his report, the answer must be yes, forgot or didn't think it worth mentioning.

It reflects the significant steps taken by the police, which Swanson was keen to put on record. Mulshaw, the old boy dozing beside his brazier in the next street, gets a mention. ‘Cross’ doesn’t.

              • >>I think we can say for a fact that when the inquest started Lechmere had clearly NOT been questioned. <<

No we can't, but we can say, the police knew about a story of two men discovering the body first, as it appeared in the newspapers prior to the inquest starting.

                >>Had Lechmere been interviewed the police would have known this was an error. <<

Or nobody would corroborate his story.

                >>Moving on, why would the police question Lechmere anyway ? <<

                Ask Andy Griffiths.

                >>It’s also worth noting when Lechmere spoke to Mizen, Lechmere had company, Robert Paul ... <<

A fact vehemently denied on these boards and elsewhere for many years and if Christer were here, still would be.

                >>Furthermore, it would have been impossible for the police to contact him anyway. <<

So his coming forward shows his good community spirit mindfulness.

                >>It would be interesting to find out exactly how the police questioned him ? <<

Sat him in a chair and asked him questions presumably.

                >>Lastly, Lechmere turned up at the inquest in his work clothes, including his apron. If he had been asked to attend then why is he dressed for work ? <<

Because the inquest started at 10 o'clock and he could get six hours worth of pay for working before the inquest, with the option of going back to work after.

If he was living "outside his mother's orbit, can we rule him out of being in Berner St on the night of Mrs Stride's murder? Which is it?

                          • The apron thing is easy to gloss over, but it is significant in my view. Why did carmen wear aprons? To protect them from horse ****. Isn’t it a bit odd that he didn’t remove his apron and leave it at work? Or even just roll it up and carry it under his arm?

Dusty (if that’s his real name) seems to be saying that if Lechmere hadn’t worn his apron in the witness box that would somehow have prevented him from returning to work.

Perhaps he wore it purposely for some reason. Just as he purposely omitted to reveal his real name.

Why does it seem to you that he saved enough money to start a business out of his meagre carman’s wages?
