  • Hi Lynn
Hello David. No, no war. If one bloke did it all, clearly MY Jacob is off the hook
In a normal world, that would be a truism, but in ripperology I admit it sounds like the utmost honesty.

and Levy may be the best of a bad lot.
One of the best Jewish suspects, perhaps.

I began investigating JI simply because I could see a stark difference in Polly and Annie on the one hand, and Liz, Kate and MJ on the other. Kate was most like the first two but with marked forensic differences. Hence, I looked to see who could have killed Polly and Annie but who was dead or off the street by the end of October. Hence, JI.
Makes more sense than Peter Turnbull, but what about Tabram, Smith, Wilson and Millwood ? No connection whatsoever with your two killers ?

Tomkins? Problem? Not sure he had one.
    He didn't like them, remember.

    • Jacobs colouration

      Hi All
      Hi Greg
Jacobs colouration was at best recorded as yellowish, this is probably through the effects of the Syphillis. I can only take this as meaning he was average colouring( same as the rest of the population) so didn't get recorded.
Jacobs address at his internment to the asylum was 36 Middlesex Street, so I would he was an active participant in the business, it could have just been serving, but certainly in 1888 I could see him still active as a butcher.
As an aside, did you notice the reasons given by Sarah and Dr. Segeuira for Jacobs internment? " Taking everything thats not tied down" and "He drinks to excess".
Half of the freaking United Kingdom would be locked up nowadays!!!

      Keep Well

      • Q & A

        Hello David. Thanks.

I daresay Tomkins had "used" one of them.

Q: Why was Polly headed towards Buck's Row?

A: Women used to come up to the gates (H & B). Buck's Row was a good place for, well, you get the idea.

        Q: Why?

A: Horse slaughterers get lonely too.

        Cheers.

Yes, agreed. Now I would not minimize the fact that Buck's Row leads to Bethnal Green.

Yeah I agree, we know that Sarah states Jacob nearly ruined her business but we have to assume he still helped out when he was able.

            • Revenge factor...

              Hi all,

Do we know when Jacob became aware of his syphillis? This could be key.

I had a thought. I'm sure it's not original but I like it. It runs thus:

Suppose Jacob has used the girls of the canon in the past. Suppose he was a regular customer who perhaps even used the same sites again and again. This would explain how the girls were disarmed. Just randy Jacob again coming to be serviced.

Then he finds out he has syphillis and he knows one of these five "ladies" gave it to him. It's now time for revenge. Hence the canon. He knows these women have been his only providers.

On a related note, I reread Scott's Butcher's Row article. It's a fine piece of work. What I'm wondering is, is it conceivable that from a backroom on the Bull Inn side of Butcher's row, that a stakeout team could watch the back-end of 36 Middlesex Street?

That would be interesting to know.

Something else I thought of, witness statements, take Mrs. Long for example, state that the man they saw was foreign looking; i.e., a Jew. What no one said was "he had a foreign accent". Being born in London, Jacob would have no foreign accent. Check another box.

              The intrigue continues...

We don't know for sure. Average progression of Syphilis would put his initial lesions (lesions the size of a dime on his penis, so not really subtle) in 1885. Evidently there was no mention of it during his 1886 incarceration, which is unusual, but he was clearly dying of it by his admission to the asylum in 1890. The average progression from exposure to death was about six years, maybe a little longer. It's possible that it was latent in 1886, but that means that he had some mental illness in no way related to his syphilis at that time.

Hello Greg. The revenge for syphilis motif was rather popular in the '60's and thereabouts. For years I took it as a given.

And if one is looking for a single killer and motive, there are many worse that this.

                    Cheers.

Thanks Lynn. Not surprised the syphillis theory goes back generations. Nothing new in ripperland after all.

Since syphilis was a death sentence, I'm wondering what could be worse from a street prostitute......?

Thanks Errata. Do you think the records indicate he was schizophrenic or suffering from madness brought on by the syphilis?

                        • levy looks too short to be LA DE DA, ....GH was very accurate with what he looked like, so i doubt he got his height wrong, 5ft 3'' is tiny compared to 5ft 6 or 7.

This seems true Malcolm if indeed Hutch saw such a character. But recall that Lawende also said 5'6" or 5'7" while Joseph Levy said 3 inches higher than the 5 foot Eddowes.

With hats and the clothes they wore and poor lighting I think an error of 3 or 4 inches can be made. I also thought since Levy was a thief, perhaps he stole all the fancy pins and watches etc. found on Astro-Man for an exciting night out with MJK.

Pale with a dark mustache could definitely be the syphilitic Jacob....
