      Hi Monty,

Thanks a lot. I knew that the area was used for storage, but I always though that the Great Eastern was using it. It was an assumption - I never came across that in writing.

Thanks again to you and Debs for the info.

      Regards,

I always liked this drawing of Swallow Gardens, the policeman looks like a pixie!

              • What a top selection of illustrations, Stewart, none of which I've seen before.

The accuracy of some of these types of contemporary illustrations is something that should not be sniffed at. After all, I guess the illustrators would have to visit the sites themselves (in the absence of easy photography).

                  Mr Evens,
I see you have a sense of humour after all. "The Pixies are the men..." Lately the Met Police have had a spate of gun and knife crimes attributed to the Pixies.

                  • Great selection of images there, Stewart. Like John I'd not seen any of them before (maybe one). It gives us a final ID on the fatal spot. Do I take it from these that the hoarding was on the LEFT side of the arch when standing in Chamber Street? That changes my mental image of it if so (because I'd always thought of comparing it to Abels Buildings).

                    • Philip,

If I may answer your question, and apologies to Stewart, but basically yes.

This image is taken from the Manchester Times 20 Feb 1891. Its of Swallow Gardens from Rosemary Lane/Royal Mint Street side (ie opposite side to the one Ive posted above.

If you look next to the 'Midland railway Goods In' sign you will see another with 'R CU' followed by 'ST' under it. Thats the sign for R Cull & Son, Stores. Ive a better image somewhere, I will see if I can find it.

I think the best one from the Royal Mint Street side is this from The Pictorial News -

Most of the images were located by Nick Connell nearly ten years ago when we were researching for The Man Who Hunted Jack the Ripper.

                            • Stewart,

These images are great. I've never seen any of them in all the Ripper books I've read.

                              Thanks a lot.

                              • Stewart,

                                Excellent, thanks.

I have got Nick and your book on Reid (as you know...I forced you to sign it at gunpoint). I can say its an absolute gem and thoroughly reccomend it.

By the way, Bulldog, Stewart has provided a better image of the Cull sign, as you can see.
