And Bulldog, as far as I can tell, (and thanks to Debs again) the hoarded side of Swallows Gardens was used by Ruben Cull & Son. They were tilers and based out Enfield way (or Barnet, Im purely working from memory) and basically used this area as a storage facility.

Thanks a lot. I knew that the area was used for storage, but I always though that the Great Eastern was using it. It was an assumption - I never came across that in writing.

What a top selection of illustrations, Stewart, none of which I've seen before.

The accuracy of some of these types of contemporary illustrations is something that should not be sniffed at. After all, I guess the illustrators would have to visit the sites themselves (in the absence of easy photography).

Great selection of images there, Stewart. Like John I'd not seen any of them before (maybe one). It gives us a final ID on the fatal spot. Do I take it from these that the hoarding was on the LEFT side of the arch when standing in Chamber Street? That changes my mental image of it if so (because I'd always thought of comparing it to Abels Buildings).

This image is taken from the Manchester Times 20 Feb 1891. Its of Swallow Gardens from Rosemary Lane/Royal Mint Street side (ie opposite side to the one Ive posted above.

If you look next to the 'Midland railway Goods In' sign you will see another with 'R CU' followed by 'ST' under it. Thats the sign for R Cull & Son, Stores. Ive a better image somewhere, I will see if I can find it.
