Unfortunately the original photograph is not of very good quality. Here's the current favourite -

Sam's pic is what you get straight up from Google- I just did it!!

    He's a star though isn't he...

But basically weepers were'nt like that sadly- they were the side boards/burns/ whiskers that joined up with the moustache leaving the chin bare- as seen in the illustrations of Abberline...Very popular amongst the gentry of the day !!...so they say!

    Hi, guys.

What's so alarming to me about Sam's photo of 'Uncle Dundreary' is that those amazing Dundreary whiskers seem to be growing out of the back of his neck!

Are they touching his face at all?

Let's hope for Sam's sake this trait doesn't run in the family

There was some discussion of this on an older thread (I cant find it now)... but I remember someone suggested the guy in front with the bowler (on the left) was Sgt. George Godley. I am not entirely convinced of that, but it seems a possibility.

Me too, Suzi, and yes, nice one Rob!!!!!

Putting names to the Detectives in the photo would be a good idea, and possibly the age of those Detective in 1886? Noting that Abberline was about 42 yrs old.

We need to know who the Detectives were in 1886.

I believe that is Walter Andrews standing fourth man to the left of our Abberline.

Walter Dew is standing in front of the man standing two places to the left of Abbo. ( Dew only joined H-Div in 1887 -so may be a little tight for Abbo and Dew to be in the same photo - unless it was Jan 87, maybe that is why Abbo is hiding, as he has put in or waiting for Transfer to Scotland Yard)

I think Stephen White is in the slouch hat standing shoulder to shoulder to the left of the "mean looking Abbo candidate".

Inspector Moore should be in the photo too, and although we have no idea what he looks like, he is about 38 yrs at the time.

Not to piss on your fireworks but they all look like your architypal Victorian policeman to me and no one more specifically alike to the Abberline illustration (which may not have been an exact replica of what he might've looked like anyway). I mean, hell, there's another bloke on the bottom line just below the first person on the left-hand-side who could just as easily double as Abberline. I don't mean to be negative but those men could be any one of a dozen LVP police officers of that time. Plus "Abberline" looks the most ominous in that picture so it's needless to say that everyone's attention is gonna be drawn more to that bloke than any of the others.
