He wouldn't have read the Era then? Good music hall reports, anyhow, so readily available in the pubs etc near the halls; he might've had a read while having a beer and a pie. I favour 'The Era.'

        Hi Claire,

I see you've put "Middle East/Wales" down as your location. Don't you mean that you're between "Iraq and Hard Place"? (giggle)

        Insincerely

Very funny, Nicole That's one of my favourite sayings of King Abdullah of Jordan, saying that Jordan was stuck between Iraq and a hard place...

That one can be found on both the Ripper Notes site (PDF format with columns and illustrations) and the Casebook dissertations section (web page).

A variety of newspapers reported the claims about chalk writing (and etc.) before the Eddowes murder, so I don't know that any particular one stands out there. Based upon the facial mutilations on Eddowes matching an illustration of Beadmore's facial mutilations that ran in the Illustrated |Police News that's probably the best bet. But then these details were widely discussed person to person as well, so Jack could have picked up all these various stories to emulate without having read a paper himself.

The better-than-average Peabody lodging houses stocked several newspapers, including the Times, which were available to read in the large common room. Another poster provided a hetfy contemporous article on the topic pre-crash, and I'd be interested to read it again.

              All the best,
