Hi Philip,
Firstly I must admit that my earlier posts were written from memory without checking any of my books or files. Having gone back through some very old notes I made over ten years ago, let me clarify my sources.
From Stephen Knight, Chapter 9:
"An elderly nun at the Roman Catholic convent in Harewood Place, W.1, only a few minutes walk from Cleveland Street, had an interesting story to tell when the BBC interviewed her in 1973. In 1915 she had beed a novice at Providence Row, directly opposite the pub where Kelly and Chapman had rubbed shoulders daily. She clearly remembered an old nun who had been there at the time of the Ripper murders telling her that "if it had not been for the Kelly woman, none of the murders would have happened"
From JTR A-z [page 228]:
"In 1988, BBC researchers for the Timewatch programme on the Ripper confirmed that the nuns of Providence Row Convent and Night Refuge, have a tradition that she [kelly] stayed briefly with them and was sent out into service from which she absconded to go on the streets. This was supported by the convent's solicitor, whose family had a tradition that they employed a maid servant sent from the convent who absconded and became a ripper victim"
It may be worth adding that the nuns at Harewood Place were from the same order of Sisters of Mercy as those at Providence Row. The Providence Row solicitor in the 1980's would have been the grandson of their solicitor in 1888.

This story immediately reminded me that the woman believed to have been first victim of "Jack the Ripper" was Mary aka Polly, her real name being Mary Ann Nichols, and she was in fact given a post in just such a way by a charitable institution anyway - she ran off -and took some laundry with her much to the annoyance of her employers !I think they believed they had been betrayed because they had taken Mary Nichols on as a kind of favour ,and I recall reading an intelligently composed letter from Mary Ann Nichols to her father telling him what a nice house she was living in and how her employers were ok to her etc.
Ofcourse she was the first of the so called "cannon" to be killed so maybe that was what the nuns were thinking of?

But the problem is the people who takes this man's tour and who have no previous experience of the Ripper, and therefore become totally misled by all the errors and fairytales. And then people like Philip are forced to go in and correct all that nonsense and clean up among the factual garbage being spread by people like him and other tour guides who dont know what they're talking about.

emlodik,
Its high possible that the murder had already been committed by the time Morris put the door ajar.

Hi Glenn
I have no doubt either that I'd be tempted to correct him,and can appreciate the fact that most find him really annoying..but,
Can you really look at Suzi's brilliant photo without a ripple of mirth breaking through?I know I've been reduced to a fit of giggles every time.
Perhaps it was the promise of "spooky but harmless fun" that attracted me to his trip..but of course, out of loyalty,I would go for the sight of Phil in his shorts every time.

Hi emlodik,
With all due respect, you are being a little unkind to this chap by referring to him as a freak...if you walk around Camden,he is not a freak he is a "local",so to speak.Believe me,he would not be out of place there. That's why it is such a brilliant place to be.
This guy is a great British eccentric...as annoying as some find him, that is exactly what he is.
I know I would rather have a world full of those, than a world full of the crazy fanatics and terrorists that unfortunately inhabit it with us at the moment.
Just a thought.
Anna.
