Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot that can be done about it.
I'm not trying to start anything, but it seems a lot more common in America than anywhere else, though I think us Aussies still hold the record with Port Arthur. But at least we took steps to reduce the number of guns out there after that.
It seems at least every month or two there is another one in the USA.
It is just so sad.G U T

The National Rifle Association (The NRA) is an extremely powerful organization and they are adamantly opposed to any legislation like you suggest. They have a huge amount of members and a great deal of money. They will go after any legislator that opposes them and they will make sure that he is not reelected. Very few politicians in the U.S. have the cojones to take them on.

Look, I am a believer in our constitution, and I believe in the "right" to bear arms.. but, that is for " a well-organized militia" not any yahoo who wants to own tons of guns....I believe in strict background checks and mandatory gun safety classes ( I know.. the argument is....well the "bad people" will just use illegal guns" .. sure they will... but it will be MUCH HARDER for them to get stolen guns if there were not so many damn guns on the streets to begin with....)
I know a guy who owns over 100 guns... not collectible guns... but just guns.. he goes to PA (Pennsylvania) every other month or so, goes to a gun show and buys more... no background check, sometimes he doesn't even have to show his ID...now it would be EASY to steal some of his guns and he wouldn’t know the difference... that’s how "Illegal" guns get on the streets...I know he is an extreme example.. but he is not "that" uncommon...
Again.. before "pro-gun" folks jump on me... I AM NOT AGAINST GUNS...if you want a gun for protecting yourself or your family... or for hunting, fine, you don't need dozens of guns, or semi-automatic machine guns... and yes, there should be a very very strict background check.....NRA people keep saying, this isn't a gun issue, it's a mental health issue... but it IS A GUN ISSUE.. if guns were not so damn easy to get there wouldn't be as many gun killings.....and I know, I know, if they didn't have guns they would find another way to kill people.. I don't buy that one... because you don't have to get so close with a gun as you do with a knife or baseball bat or whatever....
The sad thing is I don't see things changing here, only getting worse.. the other day the NRA scenario came to pass... a bad guy with a gun was trying to carjack someone and their "good guy with a gun will stop the bad guy with a gun" came along... pulled his weapon and SHOT THE PERSON BEING CARJACKED.. not the "bad guy" the person the "god guy with a gun" was protecting....but alas... nobody wants to talk about that....
Let's face it America... guns are here to stay... I say we pass a new rule...As per the 2nd Amendment you have the right to bear arms... but only the arms available when that was written.... keep your powder dry fellah's
and I know, some will say.. we need our guns for the "government takeover" guess what... your gun will not protect you.. the government has NUKES... sweet dreams..

Sensible post Steady.
I love guns, at one time was a possible for Olympics but why Joe Average needs automatics is beyond me.
And you point about the Milita is spot on the 2nd amendment was, as I understand it, passed at a time when conscripts supplied their own weapons, I think the govt supplies them now.
On the current interpretation of the section I'm surprised everyone isn't allowed to own a Nuke, you know arms for the army.G U T

I agree with just about everything Steadman has said (virtual high five here), as my state of Colorado has had more of its share of mass shootings in recent years. The most notable were at Columbine High School and the Century Six Theater in Aurora, but we've had a shooting at a church (in which a gun-carrying good citizen saved the day, but she was a police officer who served as security at the church, so not your average person off the street), and several other schools.
Colorado's gun laws were among the laxest in the nation. After the Newtown school shooting in which primary grade students and a teacher died, Colorado's governor passed some minor laws on controlling the type of weapons and bullets people could buy. The result was a deluge of business at local gun shops, NRA rallies, cops and sheriffs saying they would not enforce the laws, and so forth.
I just don't understand why people value guns over lives. I honestly don't.Pat D. https://forum.casebook.org/core/imag...rt/reading.gif

Just wanted to add that the Oregon Community College shooting hits close to home, as I work at a community college, too, and we have poor security (although the new campus police chief is working hard at making improvements).Pat D. https://forum.casebook.org/core/imag...rt/reading.gif

If anybody thinks that strict gun control works they only need to look at where I live, Washington, D.C. There are no gun shops in D.C. and up until a couple of years ago it was illegal for a D.C. citizen to own a gun. It is now possible to get a gun license but it is a long, drawn out and relatively expensive process. So you would think that there would be virtually no gun crime in D.C. but in actuality D.C. has gun crime out the wazoo. Well how can that be? The answer is simple. Criminals go to neighboring Virginia and buy guns and bring them back into D.C. and use them to commit crimes. They don't give a rat's behind about the law because they are criminals. So the criminals in D.C. have guns but law abiding citizens like myself have trouble in obtaining them so we can protect ourselves from the criminals. That is the reality and it makes zero sense.

Hello Steadmund,
I have to disagree with your assessment of the power of the NRA. They have several million members (over 4 million according to the NRA itself). They are extremely well funded and extremely well organized. You could find a cure for cancer and end world hunger but if you are a politician who is in favor of gun control that is all they care about it and they will come after you. Letters will go out to every NRA member in your state or district saying not to vote for you and they will spend a ton of money on ads targeting you. They may be loud but they are also very formidable.
