That's good info there Sam, thanks for posting.

Barnaby there was absolutely no offense caused, I was just being a typical stubborn Englishman about the whole debacle. I'll try and hone it in a bit in the future!

I loved this tweet reported in today's papers:

'If only there was a German word for schadenfreude.'

We raised a glass to Christian J each time another goal went in. Hi Christian, if you read this.

Plastered by the end of the match, naturally. Hic.

      Love,

The British created the word 'soccer' and it stuck in America, Japan, China, Taiwan, and other countries. I'm fine with it. I use both words depending on where I am and who's around me. Everyone knows the real football is rugby union anyway.

By the way Gareth, that countryman of yours, Halfpenny...his dominance (when he's healthy) reminds me of Wilkinson's. When he's in the game, the Welsh back 3 are as good as it gets and that includes southern hemisphere. He's like a Dan Carter/Wilko combo, with Tana Umaga recklessness. Smart, smart player.

Halfpenny is indeed a fine player, Mike. Your appreciation of him is reciprocated

Good to see a Europe vs. South American final. Not too fussed either way, but I suspect Germany will have too much for the Argies.

And I was glad to see the Dutch go out. What a bunch of obnoxious...

Originating in Brighton, I once (many, many, years ago) supported the "Seagulls" at football and "Sussex" at cricket...so I'm well accustomed to great promise being followed by humiliating defeat...just like when my granny taught me Crib and my uncle played me at Scrabble...

A lifetime since of somewhat cynical living shouts "Get over it...it's only a bloody game..."...and taught me that it's actually of no more significance than that...

                  All the best

                  Dave

With all this talk of war we have to wonder if the Italians have surrendered yet or at the very least changed sides.

I haven't seen a lot of him yet but what I have seen I've liked.

I will give it a shot and try to answer my own question. What the example needs is a competition between two respected powers (not examples of an underdog defeating a power) where one completely demolishes the other in historic fashion.

The Clay-Liston fight? Assuming it wasn't fixed.

Well, I hope this does not annoy anyone but really, I had no idea when you all were talking about football you were talking about soccer.

Over here everyone calls it soccer including the announcers on tv, so what would you expect it to be called...in this region.

Porsche's utter domination of Ferrari at the 1970 LeMans race? Early in the race, two privateer and one factory Ferrari had a huge pileup, and the second factory Ferrari missed a shift and blew his engine up avoiding it. The Porsche factory team finished 30 laps in front of the surviving privateer Ferraris.

It seems kind of an apt comparison to me, considering how Brazil self-destructed early on.
