    Hunting dogs

Any hunter around ? or hunting dogs lover ?

I love hunting dogs and that's the main reason why I've started hunting.

    Among my fav breeds ;

    Hungarian viszla
    Wirehaired pointing griffon
    Braque français (type pyrénées)

There is nothing that makes a dog happy like hunting. You should see my bitch when, in the evening, I'm preparing my clothes and everything for the morrow...and it makes me happy as well.

Not a hunter, but an absolute dog lover and at one stage a show judge, the Viszla and Griffon are great dogs I am not familiar with the Braque français so will have a look and see if I know it by another name.

What do you have yourself, the above?

Just had a quick search and the Braque français looks like a pointer type and a good sturdy dog.

Well spotted, there is some pointer's blood in the braque français (the short one, the "pyrénées" type).
My bitch is half braque, half dalmatian.
Now I'm looking for a Viszla, most probably a wirehaired one, but I love both types. I need a dog that swim easily, for I mainly hunt ducks, and they say Viszla are perfect in this respect. The breed isn't common in France, though. I can have one next month for 750 euros.

          Can't argue with those choices.

Currently have a Dalmatian, having bred and shown them for many years and a Chinese Crested, not sure either are much use for hunting other than mice. Had a Doberman at one point and a short stint with English Pointers and Bloodhounds an Irish Wolfhound is on the dream list when I retire.

If you are duck hunting and I presume your area is fairly cold a wirehaired Viszla is probably a good pick or of course a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever if you can find one. 750 Euro sounds high that's about $1,500 AUS.

The only hunting that is really big here are feral pigs and in some area Kangaroos.

            Dalmatians are marvelous.
My little half-cast is excellent to retrieve birds (thrush, mainly). But she doesn't like water if not warm.
I don't hunt mammals, never. Only birds.

Good night, I'll let you know if I buy this viszla !

As a keen shooter this is one of the reasons I don't hunt.

              BTW what do you shoot?

I don't hunt but come from a family who does and as such I really don't have any problem with it.

I am a dog lover, however, and when I moved to the southern United States I was somewhat outraged at how some hunting dogs were treated. Besides being kept as outside dogs in extreme heat, the actual hunting process often involves using them to scare up deer etc by running them into the swamps. There are some dangerous creatures (alligators, snakes) that inhabit these swamps and it just rubs me the wrong way to see hunters shooting from safety and putting their animals at risk.

I guess I would just hope people view their dogs as hunting companions and not hunting instruments. Unfortunately, viewing dogs as property to be starved, beaten, etc. is still far too common in some areas on the country.

I am totally convinced that my dogs get treated better than I do. As I have some health conditions my little dog spends most of his time curled up on the bed beside me. The dally sleeps with my daughter. But I agree 100% some people treat them like property my view is they didn't ask to become part of my family I chose to take them so they deserve to be treated well.

the Braque français (type pyrénées) almost the same as a German Shorthaired Pointer though that maybe the Gascogn I'm looking at.

                      Hi Barnaby,

My bitch has her own sofa to watch TV and sleeps on my bed. She likes hunting even more than I.

                      Hi Gut,

The Gasgogne type is bigger, that's why he looks like a German pointer. The Pyrénées barely weights around 20 kg, and his muzzle looks more like that of a pointer.

                      Cheers

A breed that I like very much and who would be perfect to hunt ducks is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
Unfortunately it's almost unknown in France, nearly impossible to find.

Ha! I can imagine. I have a lab rescue who loves to tree squirrels and chase the neighborhood ducks.

What exactly have these innocent creatures done to you? You wouldn't treat your worst enemy the way that hunters treat animals, and these animals are NOT your enemy.

Americans are gun crazy and like nothing better than to go out taking pot shots at anything that it is classed as legal to shoot, which basically is anything non-human. You don't care if you hurt these creatures by winging them, or having a lousy aim.

What exactly is macho about aiming a gun at something and pulling the trigger? Even I could do that! It's not as though you're having to wrestle crocodiles or similar? It's cowardly and cruel.

A sport means that each side knows the rules and this 'sport' is one sided.

Hunters, i.e. serial killers (because that is exactly what you are) can always justify their bad behaviour and I feel confident that hunters reading this will have a lot to say.

However, you'll be glad to hear that I will not be returning to this thread to read any of your idiocy.

In the name of God please give up hurting living things in the name of 'sport'.
                            This is simply my opinion

                              I wish I could agree.
But you see, my mother has been devoured by a gang of rough mallards when I was only 3.
I remember I threw my dummy, aiming at the chief, but that didn't stop them.

Could I forget that painful memory, I'd be a vegan - just as you are, I hope.
