I don't know how it is in the UK, but public schools are much more concerned with pushing their political or social agendas nowadays than actually EDUCATING the students. Critical Thinking especially is completely ignored, as is Basic English, Math, Philosophy and Science.

I've always been fascinated with the weird, formal, stilted, polysyllabic English that American cops are trained to speak. I think they think it gives them an air of authority. It just makes them sound foolish.Originally posted by Herlock Sholmes View PostMy apologies to the USA but….why do the Police refer to dogs as canines?Kunochan

I don't know if I would say foolish exactly. It does seem affected and rather than foolish it makes them seem cold and impersonal and lacking human emotions and empathy so as to make it seem they are immune and above it all.Originally posted by Kunochan View Post

Not an irritation but more of an observation. Walking around the last few days confirms that Americans love pumpkins. They are everywhere. Porches and steps leading to them overflow with pumpkins. People are big on fall and Halloween decorations.

I talked to an American friend earlier this year and he was quite surprised that I’d never actually eaten pumpkin. Does anyone from the UK ever eat pumpkin?Herlock Sholmes

Hello Herlock,
Most Americans don't realize that their beloved Pumpkin Pie, the traditional finish to the Thanksgiving meal actually comes from a type of squash and not an actual pumpkin. Although you can get the real thing most people buy it canned from the grocery and that is squash not pumpkin.
