But what exactly are you 'suspicious' about, in Harry's case?
The Harry thing is really interesting to me only in that ... I don't actually understand why people are actually this interested in it. I'm actually reading about it to try and figure out what the fasciation is. I keep thinking I missed something. Like, it's family drama. We all have family drama. Like...does anyone NOT have some family relationship where one sibling is favored over the other and gets all the good toys and daddy loves him best and the other gets **** on? A cousin or someone you know? But Harry gets paid hundreds of millions of dollars to tell what is basically an extremely common story, because he was born into a privileged family and he was the least privileged of the lot.

It's...a weird kind of claim. "I was the least loved ... prince." Like. Okay. You're still Prince Harry." I don't know. It's not that I don't understand his pain is still real, and he's still a real human being and it still matters but I'm also kind of like.... he got paid hundreds of millions of dollars to tell what is basically, not an original story at all except, he was born into royalty? Like... that's it. He isn't special except by circumstances of birth which isn't really... special? I don't know. Exceptionally unexceptional. I can't fathom why people are this interested or ... care. Why is everyone outraged? Why does anyone care? I want to know what people's fascination are with it.

If you like the Royal Family... like them. If you like Harry, like him. Like them both. Dislike them both. Both sides are probably equally valid in their points of view and both sides are probably equally valid and equally awful in their treatment of one another and products of their environments and spineless natures. They're all... aggressively average?

I really would like someone to tell me what the fascination is. Genuinely. I am sincerely asking if you are really aggravated by this Harry book, or really upset, like...what's the emotional pull for you? Genuine question from trying to genuinely understand the perspective because I super don't get it.

Nor do I get it, Ally.

The difference is that I don't care why people get so hot under the collar about it, any more than I care about the people at the heart of this non-story. It's just something else for people to get angry about. If it takes their minds off the awful state of the country, all well and good.

But if the media have unwittingly prodded Harry into writing this book, and the huge proceeds are going to charity, that's a great big plus as far as I'm concerned. If I could write such a popular book about my family and other inbreds, I'd do it.

Good for Harry, England and Saint George. Did Magna Carta die in vain etc etc.

      Love,

      Caz

I'm at a complete loss as to how to explain the current furore too.

The whole thing is downright weird, but kind of interesting.

In very simplistic terms, battlelines appear to be drawn on some kind of old/ traditional / conservative V modern / progressive / liberal basis.

It's basically the "things aren't like they were in the good old days" posse against the "snowflake" brigade, with both sides getting their knickers in a terrible twist.

        Old World v New World.

The problem is that both parties involved (ie the RF and H&M) are so utterly unappealing, that it's hard to muster up any enthusiasm for the fight.

I myself belong to the third category which consists of those who don't give a flying f#@% !!!

LOL... so this family's "You don't love me as much as my brother!" drama is being used as just another cudgel in the unending war between the liberals and the conservatives? Well isn't that...

typical. Those people can use anything to fight their stupid wars. Even the inbred.

I doubt most understand that it is not at all uncommon for someone to plead guilty to criminal charges, rather than take a risk with a jury (always risky) because a guilty fee will save huge dollars and reduce any penalty, often to no goal time, v lengthy sentence. Or settle civil cases because they can pay ”go away” money rather than take the risk of a hearing and the costs on top.

Well said GUT. To reinforce what you say, it works both ways. A common tactic for plaintiffs in civil cases is to "settle on the courthouse steps" rather than proceed to trial with the all the risks that entails.

Why a four-year-old child could understand this report! Run out and find me a four-year-old child, I can't make head or tail of it.

Booksellers in Australia were expecting a big demand approaching that for the Harry Potter books. As reported in the newspapers they ordered large quantities of stock and some even opened early. Apparently there has been no rush or queues forming to get the book. Sales are described as 'steady'. I for one will not be reading it. I fall into the who cares category.

And they only settle at the last minute often having invested the money as soon as they knew proceedings were possible.though it is usually the defendant that fits that.

I at one stage was doing a lot of unfair dismissal work, mainly for the employer, and couldn’t couthow often I said “If they get the maximum they can it would amount to under $10,000, now think of this a two day hearing will cost you $4 to 5 K just for me, the solicitor will charge you a couple of grand to draft the documents, staff will lose a day between them to give instructions for affidavits, you (owner etc) and probably a manager will be in Court for two days rather than in the workplace, (and while I think we will there can be no guarantee) now do you want me to try and settle it. same with contract fights, same with Family law property settlements, same with will disputes. Not advise I really like giving but a commercial decision.

Uh ... we're talking about a multi-millionaire member of the Royal Family who has hundreds of millions at their disposal being accused of raping a teenager. You're going to tell me that they're not willing to throw a few million into a trial to keep from being called a kiddie rapist for all time? This isn't, "You fired me unfairly". This is, you raped a child. Not the same thing. This is defamation of the most revolting sort, if it's not true. And they've got all the money on the planet, and they're just going to let the defamation stand? Really?

REALLY? This is not a situation where a pyrrhic victory isn't worth the cost. This is a situation where you fight til the death because losing is unfathomable. If of course it's not true. I mean, from one perspective. If you value your reputation, and don't care that people think you're a kiddie rapist. Or consider yourself so far above the opinions of the common man, that you are immune from the judgment of everyone knowing you're a kiddie rapist.

I mean hell Johnny Depp fought what everyone thought was a completely unwinnable defamation case because his wife accused him of beating her. He spent more money on that than he will ever get back on it, and he's pledging (and actually donating) his winnings to charity. And he let that **** play out publicly exposing himself as kind of a jackass, and ended up coming up better than anyone EVER thought he would have going into that trial, because ... as it turned out, his wife was lying out of her ass.

Like... what's the truth worth to you? When you have all the money in the world to play with?
