By the way, your Richard looks like Michael DeLuise. It bothered me for days until I watched an old episode of Stargate and saw him on it.

Really? He's not one of the people I borrowed skin from, if that makes sense. I thought the pic ended up looking a little like James Frain, and I didn't use him either. The people I did use got tweaked so much before I made a composite, they didn't look like themselves, though-- I picked people who already had faces shaped a lot like Richard's, then overlaid them, and photoshopped the edges so they were the same shape exactly, and moved the features into place, tilted the eyes, and soforth. I looked at actors who were the same age as Richard, but they are so well-kept, I ended up using one who was 15 years older than Richard.

I also put the bust through a process of relighting that changed the shadows, brought out its own blemishes, and made it look older and weathered, and darker-skinned. It actually made it look more human.

It happens. I did one of those merge things online where you take two people and the program makes a composite face of the two people. I did Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison, and the result was my Uncle Mark.

I saw that report too Monty.

The design seems tasteful, no effigy, and relevant motifs around the sides - white roses of York included.

Apparently the cathedral is starting a consultation, but if the RIII Society has designs well advanced and will fund the £30,000 needed, then they should have a head start. And they have worked with the Dean & Chapter before (the Cathedral authorities) over the present monumental slab.

I can see the Cathedral wanting a low slab again as less likely to get in the way, but he is a King after all, so a chest tomb might be appropriate.

Friday looks like the best day for me to get to the Leicester exhibition btw.

I like the look of the tomb. Nice and simple. However, I am thinking that it might need to be roped off or otherwise protected from nutters, souvenir hunters, graffiti artists, etc.

Might I ask what the exhibition is in Leicester that is being discussed? Is there an exhibition on Richard III already? If so, how long is it going to be on? I am planning to be in the UK for the Rippercon in early November.

It's only a small one.basically telling the story of the dig,with some of the small finds....not sure on duration..Monty may know.

I had the same immediate reaction, but then I thought...

Any effigy would have to be subjective, a modern inter0pretation - and what would the face be based on? The older portraits or the recent bust?

I seem to recall seeing - I may still have the cutting somewhere - an article in an old Sunday colour supplement, whic contained an article about the RIII Society. It was when the Leicester memorial slab was being considered and there was a picture showing in the background all the maquettes etc that were prepared - several had effigies. So the Society has almost certainly considered such an approach.

There is also a very nice and impressive statue in a park in Leicester, showing R III in armour crown in hand, at Bosworth. So there is a 3D portrait of the King in the City already.

Both Archaeology and Ethics have always fascinated me, so I thought this topic was interesting: When is it alright to display human remains?

- When they are "sufficiently old enough"? (Of course very subjective.)

- When they are of "historic interest"?

- Should "royal" remains not be displayed for some reason?

- Are they in some way different from other human remains?
