    • Richard the III and the car park.

I do hope the media here in the US has some coverage as to whether that really is the boy of Richard the III.I don't see why he couldn't be buried in the cathedral there,if not Westminister, just have a funeral mass for him in some catholic church there or in London if he is reburied in Westminister Abbey.

Also, maybe it's time to exhume the bones of those boys who reside in the urn in Westminister Abbey, who may or may not be the little Princes in the Tower. With DNA testing maybe they will come up with an answer. If they aren't than it might prove Richard didn't kill them. However, that still leaves the mystery of what happend to them. Could Richard have shipped them off to say some monastery as protection if they were in danger and he thought perhasp even the Tower wasn't safe? It's a thought. In the past it wasn't unusal for parents to give their sons or daughters to the church. What's to say he didn't do it with his nephews, but more to keep them safe than anything.
Probably that's what happend to some of my ancestors in Germany and Hungary ages ago.
However, it is really strange that he didn't produce the boys.If he had that really would have gotten rid of a lot of the rumors surrounding them.

      • I believe that Richard's future has already been determined...

        • I guess you don't go around disinterring royal bodies, even just "possiblies," for idle curiosity. I pointed out many weeks ago that if this is definitely Richard, this is a chance to get a Y-chromosome match to the skeletons, even if DNA in any case is to degraded to get the sort of match you want to say "this is an uncle," without having to disinter any other body.

However, someone pointed out that aside from you just don't go around disinterring bodies for fun, there was a rumor at some point the Edward IV wasn't the boys father. I guess no one wants to know that for certain, and no one needs to, since their lineage wasn't continued.

But, I'm sure the DNA data from Richard will be saved, and maybe even a tissue sample will. That means that in the future, if it becomes necessary to disinter the presumed princes for some other reason, and there is therefore opportunity for a forensic exam, the DNA matches could be done then.

I've no problem with such a hook-up between academia and popular media. However, it should lead to us being cautious about any conclusions yet to be announced.
Its due to the programme makers that the releasing of the results have been delayed.

              • How To View From U.S.?

Does anybody know if the Feb 4th press conference will be streamed on the internet? (Hopefully in a way accessible from the U.S.?)

And does anybody know if the documentary "Richard III - The King In the Car Park" will be broadcast on American TV, or if it will be available on the internet for U.S. viewers?

I checked the Channel 4 website, and although some of their videos are viewable in the US, that one will not be.

...Aaarrgh!! It's so frustrating. Maybe we'll get to watch it about a year late, like Downton Abbey.

                Thanks,

I'm hoping that we Americans will at least be able to view the Feb. 4 press conference online via the University of Leicester's website.

Not sure if this has already been posted, but I just found the whole September 2012 U.L. press conference and an interview with the lead archeologist Richard Buckley on the university website, and the format actually works for US viewing... Hallelujah!

I'm sure BBCAmerica will run it, but there are all sorts of copyright restrictions and things-- there might be a snippet of music that has one distributor in the UK, which has allowed it, but its still pending approval by the US distributor, so they will go back and re-edit with a different snippet of music that is in public domain, or just get rid of the music, ditto for something else, like a clip from one of the many films about Richard, or a clip of a Royal Shakespeare performance. Also, there are odd things, like making subtitles that are readable (I don't mean by the watcher, I mean, that will show up) on US TV, because they use a special signal, and it may be one in the UK that is entirely different from the one in the US. In the US, all new shows must have closed captions. I don't think there is a statute about a descriptive video track, but it is very much in vogue, so the US version may be provided with one if it does not already have one.

However, I'm sure someone in the UK who has the equipment, will pirate it and post it. It will be up on Megavideo, or something, for about three days, beginning about 12 hours after it broadcasts, until BBC finds out about it, and makes him take it down. Then he will make bootleg DVDs, which you will be able to buy. They will be on eBay for a little while, until BBC finds out about it, and makes him take it down, then he will be selling them somewhere, but you'll have to hunt for it. It may be a downloadable .rar file you have to buy.

It will take about two months, but eventually, there will be a free torrent.

About a year after the show finally legally airs on BBCA, you will be able to buy a DVD of the UK version.

                      Hi all,

I would love to find out it is Richard III's body, and it is buried at Leicester Cathedral or Westminster. I favor the Cathedral as it is fitting he should have a seperate tomb from the other Royals. Richard is a special case - probably with his namesake Richard the I, William I, and Edward the Confessor, the only English monarchs of the medieval period that people recall. Even as ursurped nephew, Edward V is usually referred to as one of the two "Princes in the Tower" with his younger brother, because Edward V (outside of England) has the misfortune of being followed with the name of "King Edward" by a later boy king who never fully grew to manhood, Edward VI. I know I'm always confusing them.

Richard died trying to save his reign at Bosworth Field not far from Leicester, so there is a solemnity in his death (the last English monarch to die in a battle) that deserves to be noted. Why not bury him in a tomb at Leicester? Why not indeed?

Perhaps too, the discovery of the dead King's remains may spur some more of Britain's archeologists to look around for other items and remains that are missing. I seem to recall that a ring that may have been King John's, and part of his royal jewelry lost in the "Wash" incident of 1216 was recently found by sheer luck. That news item seems to have vanished as quickly as it came up. Charles I's jewelry and property were lost in some Scottish Lake in the 1640s during the Civil Wars (and no joking comments that Holmes and Watson found the crown in solving the "Musgrave Ritual"). In the early 1990s some divers claimed they found the wreckage of the Collins' liner Pacific (disappeared in January 1856, probably sunk by icebergs), some 60 miles away from Liverpool off the Welsh coast. Nobody has since gone back for a second look. And there are other questions that might be looked into.

But at least now we may really have Richard again.

                      This is one pleased Yank.

                      Jeff

                      • Whoever it is, he is to be buried in Leicester.

That is the procedure for such matters.

According to UL, this link will become a Richard III Dig website as soon as the press conference is over:

Discover the background to the search for King Richard III, the discovery and identification of the remains - and the implications for our understanding of history.

...Which leads me to believe it's really him!
I guess there are a few perks to the 8 hour time difference between England and Seattle.

                              Here's the timeline they've posted:

                              Timeline:
10.00am – Press conference announcing the results of the scientific analysis of the Greyfriars skeleton
11.00am – New website goes live at this address
9.00pm – Documentary about the project on Channel 4
