Well yes, but knowing where it was amounts to very little. Excavation has provided a partially conjectural ground plan, for example, and doubtless other information about the actual monastery which was previously lost to knowledge - the 'rediscovery' of the monastery is important in its own right.

'Richard' is the crowd puller though

I was just sort of thinking of the average joe opinion. They start setting up the dig and say "we are looking for the Monastery." and some guy on the street says "Really? See the parking garage? Right there, about five feet down."

I don't think we've lost anything since 1776, but before that, unless it's a mound city, we have what a Vietnam pilot of my acquaintance calls "An unacceptably high radius of uncertainty". It's not exactly lost, because we can typically narrow it down to state...

And I don't even know how Egyptologists manage, because that stuff could be anywhere. I mean it's like Cleopatra's tomb picked up its foundations and just started running, freezing every time someone looks at it. Like some bizarre cross between "Hide and Seek" and "Red Light Green Light". I think it's in Cleveland now. I honestly do.

Yeah, I didn't think so.

I never even heard of Worksop before this article. But that seems to be the point with some of these efforts; trying to get themselves on the tourist map by way of King Richard's remains. I guess it's to be expected.

Glad that (at least so far) nobody has suggested divvying up the skeleton- a jaw bone here, a pelvic bone there...

Leicester makes the most sense to me.

Rare 1484 Gold Coin Found On Bosworth Field

Pretty cool; they think this this Richard III gold coin may have been lost at the time of the 1485 battle.

I read this and started thinking about all of the ways change falls out of my pocket. Usually in movies when I put my feet up on the chair in front of me. And I started thinking "Gee I don't know why I never thought about it, but of course change would be falling out of their pockets while on horseback."

And then I stopped, actually thought about that for a second, and started laughing really hard at myself.

Does such an investment indicate that they are reasonably certain that the remains will be firmly identified as Richard's, I wonder?

Could be embarrassing if they make big plans and then find that the bones won't play!!

It was on the Radio news yesterday and as I went past the site yesterday, I notice the For Sale signs are still up.

Yeah, I thought it too early unless they know something we don't. However knowing Leicester City Council it wouldn't surprise me if they do **** it up.

That said, I welcome a new museum even if its not Richard. The history of the site itself warrants it.

Geo-Phys

Heres an article regarding the Geo-Phys techniques that were used to survey the archeological site. Pretty cool that they can make a 3-D computer model of it which the strata can be viewed from any angle.

Well, it will be a moment that will change the history books forever.

Prepare for:

* bookshops to be FULL of volumes of RIII
* a raft of new books on RIII in 2013/14
* a major exhibition somewhere (Leicester?)
* a big revival of interest in C15th
* LOTS of romantic novels featuring RIII - even more than at present (Alison Weir et al).

I'm wondering what (if anything) the information with-held from the public might be especially as, supposedly, it will be sufficient to identify him even if there is no successful DNA match. My money's on a signet ring.
