He also played Watson 3 times. Twice to Christopher Lee’s Holmes in the early nineties and once Roger Moore’s Holmes in Sherlock Holmes in New York.Originally posted by Wickerman View Post
Patrick Macnee was pretty bad in the Avengers, the only continuous role he is remembered for.Herlock Sholmes

I heard that he ended up smoking 100 fags and drinking a bottle of Scotch a day, largely because of frustration that he never quite made the big time, by his own estimation, that is. However, he still lived into his 90's. I think his basic problem - and he did have a successful career in spite of it - was that he was always going to be John Steed of The Avengers. Not my kind of actor at all.Originally posted by Herlock Sholmes View Post

I didn’t know that he was a heavy drinker Graham? Sometimes when you see an actor playing a certain role you find yourself thinking “what possessed anyone to cast him in that role?” Everyone has an image of Holmes based largely on the Paget illustrations but also other great illustrators like Frank Wiles (who did my favourite Holmes illustration)and Frederick Dorr Steele who drew Holmes in Colliers weekly in America (in actual fact he drew William Gillette as Holmes) and others. Macnee was nothing like Holmes in appearance. He was stocky for a start, like Reginald Owen and Edward Woodward. So straight away your’e just not convinced. Plus, as you say, everyone sees him as John Steed.Originally posted by Graham View Post
