Personally, I couldn't give a damn what horrors countries have in their pasts. Nor do I care, in this instance, what dodgy decisions their governments have taken recently. I have no clue what relevance it has to Phil's original post--which was simply to highlight the human trauma. Pointing out what a country's government has done in the past that we don't agree with is just another excuse for bigotry, particularly when it is mentioned to denigrate the terror and loss experienced by individual civilians. At best, it's tasteless to raise such matters at these times.

It was a decent and heartfelt original post, Phil. Cheers.
    best,

    claire

That short sentence of mine was only a short nasty pinch supposed to provok a snap, since people only open their eyes when they fall hard on their butts, for me it's all the same all over the world, I can't help being so sour, that's the result of lucidity.

Well, because there, you can legally buy child-pornography, all simply.

I often find that those who claim lucidity are often not playing with a full deck. This may not pertain to you, however.

I've never had the pretention to know everything or understand everything (or else I wouldn't keep asking questions all the time), or even to be the sanest person on earth, but at least I don't play the ostrich game, I wish I could remember that thing called "compassion"

Against some things some posters rather rudely and without warrant have said, I am deeply saddened by the distaster. Some of my family live in California off the cost of San Francisco and I was truly scared for their safety for a night. Thankfully the damage to the west coast of the United States was minimal, but the same cannot be said for those in Japan and in areas in which the affect of the quake was greater. Instead of insulting those of the past, which I find distastefully immature, why don't we pray for those who have done nothing wrong?

Thank you for this thread Phil,

              Corey

              Washington Irving:

"To a homeless man, who has no spot on this wide world which he can truly call his own, there is a momentary feeling of something like independence and territorial consequence, when, after a weary day's travel, he kicks off his boots, thrusts his feet into slippers, and stretches himself before an inn fire. Let the world without go as it may; let kingdoms rise and fall, so long as he has the wherewithal to pay his bills, he is, for the time being, the very monarch of all he surveys. The arm chair in his throne; the poker his sceptre, and the little parlour of some twelve feet square, his undisputed empire. "

                  So do I, Maria.
Thankfully, the posts Claire and Corey are referring to are both childish and laughable.

Hey guys... please let's make an effort to stop squabbling.

No human being and no nation is perfect, and every human being and every nation goes through their time of suffering.

Let's just try to focus our compassion on those who are suffering right now, wherever they may be.

                      Peace everybody.

Japanese are great and their civilazation one of the most refined.
This isn't a scoop from last week.

What do Nanking and Unit 731 have to do with this thread ?
                            Shame.

                              Man's Best Friend

We've all seen countless videos of the horrifying death and destruction in Japan; here's a little video with a happy ending involving man's best friend.

By the way, I got a brief message from my friends in Tokyo, the first news I've had since Saturday. No details, just that they're "still OK". I'm still praying.

                              Best regards,

we obviously don't have the same definitions of "laughable" "great" and "shame" David (and obviously thanks not)
