Most Over Hyped Movies/Actors

I know we live in a world where movies/actors are subject to as much promotion as the studio can squeeze out of them but some films/actors are seemingly perpetuated as being great when in fact they are complete tosh.

Another maxim is one mans meat is another mans poison but here's my tuppence worth for starters. Most, if not all, are post mid 70's

• All of the Star Wars films bar The Empire Strikes Back which wasn't bad really.
• Rocky. Sentimental nonsense. At least Rocky III had Mr T in it!
• Titanic. Nice boat shame about the script.
• Chariots of Fire. Middle class rubbish. Cannot even be saved by Vangelis' inspired music.
• John Wayne. In over 100 outings he managed to squeak out 2 or 3 half decent performances.
• Shakespeare In Love. Bum numbing crap masquerading as clever drama. Saving Private Ryan wipes the floor on all levels compared to this turkey.
• American Beauty. See above.
• Keira Knightly. Oh! do give over. My cat has more acting talent.
• Harry Potter films, bar TPOA which was bloody good. The rest are the same film redone over again. Here's hoping that Ms Rowling never encourages Hollywood again by not writing another one!!

Thankfully I've got that off my chest.

Citizen Kane - A good film but not as good as we're supposed to think it is.

The Outlaw - Is it bad satire/comedy or a drama that's so bad it's only slightly funny, I can't tell?

As well as poor movies, I'd like to throw some "comedians" into the discussion...

Steve Martin.... 1 or 2 funny appearances but the rest of his work is utter rubbish, and he makes me laugh like I would if I stubbed my toe.

Robin Williams.... One of the unfunniest men I've ever seen (ok I've only ever seen him on TV) but I think he's VERY good at playing a serious actor. I liked him in 1 Hour Photo and Bicentennial Man

Tommy Cooper... errr... I know some folk absolutely worship this guy as the funniest man who ever lived, but I just don't get it at all... Sorry.

Sorry Stan but you are completely wrong about Citizen Kane. We live in an age where CGI is commonplace but Orson Welle's technical team invented cinematic tricks that would survive for a further 30 or 40 odd years without comparison. You cannot see the join in the matte-ing in Kanes election address speech among many others. Apart from showing one man's descent into madness with a certain dignity it is awash with original special effects that is extremely rare in mainstream film making.

Hughes' The Outlaw? Not seen it. Probably never will either. I've seen better tits on a cow.

I agree wholeheartedly with your choices of Steve Martin and Robin Williams.
Steve Martin made some very good films in the late 70's early 80's such as:

• The Jerk
• All Of Me
• Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
• The Man With Two Brains

Robin Williams has also acted the part in films such as:

• Sieze The Day
• The World According To Garp
• Good Will Hunting
• One Hour Photo
• Insomnia

Yet the rest of their canon is payday coupled with sentimental dogshit that they should be ashamed of.

I disagree over Bicentennial Man...that was just the same old Williams nonsense. I would vote Mrs Doubtfire over that crap and that wasn't a lot to write to home about.

Don't agree over Tommy Cooper. I only have to look at the bloke and I start laughing. That to me is comic genius. Although I do the same thing when I see David Cameron. So you could be right.

I have to agree with Derrick here, what people today do not realize is that Wells changed the way films were made and how films looked with Kane (well with the help of Greg Toland the brilliant cinematographer) just the use of deep focus alone was ground breaking, but add that with the fact that almost every single scene in the film is a special effect... well just amazing, now the story doesnt hold up so well today as times have changed so much, but the film itself, like I said changed film forever....

Now on to the topic..... can someone, anyone please explain to me why people find Will Ferrell funny, hey may very well be the most unfunny man I have ever seen.....Ok I'll stop now as I really don't like to be negative on the forums.. but that is a question I must ask.

Steve Martin was also excellent in Planes, Trains and Automobiles (playing the uptight/anal/snobby foil to the immortal John Candy's lovable shlub loser).

Pulp Fiction...splendid original adult entertainment that has not been bettered.
ET...An eternal fairy story for children of all ages.
THe Big Chill. Well you've not lived. One of the all time greats.
Do The Right Thing. You obviously don't understand modern politics in American. Watch it again as a double bill with Boyz 'n' The Hood to get both sides of the story from black American film makers.
