He was played by Colin Jeavons in the Jeremy Brett series, but not my idea of what Lestrade looked like.

Martin Dakin also suggested that John Watson had been shot in the arse in Afghanistan.

Back to Holmes: Doyle is not clear on the pronunciation of "Lestrade". I like to rhyme it with laid rather than lard but this is just my preference. Anyone ever come across anyone else with this surname and if so, how is it pronounced?

LOL no it's not quite that bad, I have broadband but it has limits and sites like Youtube use it up quicksmart, then i'm back to dial-up....like now... so I don't bother with it.

Anyway, in return for my watching Dad's Army, I think you and Robert and everybody else should Youtube (or hire DVD's, if you can get them there) of an Australian show..... Hey Hey It's Saturday. Get the 80's/early 90's episodes if you can, extremely funny stuff, you'll love it. Great story as well....show originally ran from 1971 - 1999, then a decade later, on the back of a Facebook campaign which is now well over half a million members strong, the show has made a comeback! Original cast and all....it just completed its first season and will be back for a second in October. Proof that miracles do happen.....

Thanks for the links, Zodiac, but unfortunately my neither my programs nor my internet connection are up to date enough to watch Youtube clips. What i'll do though is go to the video shop and hire out a Dad's Army DVD or two, and see how it goes. Sounds a little like the last series of Blackadder actually....speaking of, there's another great show!

Sorry mate, I didn't realise that you couldn't get Youtube. Yes, hiring one of the DVD's is a good idea. It was written by David Croft who co wrote "Are you being served?" and 'Allo 'Allo! And Jimmy Perry. They also wrote "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" and " Hi-de-Hi!"

Sorry about your internet connection etc. You realise that I'm now picturing you as living in the middle of the outback... Where all those backpackers go missing... Adam, your not that bloke off "Wolf Creek" are you????

Yep after 37 years they are pulling the plug on lotsw. It has been the longest ever tv series, not sure if that is in the Uk or all over.

I know that Carmen Silvera, who played Rene's wife Edith, appeared in one episode of Dad's Army as a woman whom Mainwaring falls in love with, and almost runs away with.

I'm not sure whether Frank Thornton is still in LOTSW, as I've lost touch with it. I think they're cancelling it after the next series.

There's often re-runs of it on TV down here.....I remember watching an episode once where Gorden Kaye played a cameo role, he of course went on to play Rene in "Allo' Allo'"......and I think Frank Thornton (Peacock) is still kicking and does occasional guest spots on "Last Of The Summer Wine", right?

Anyway, Arthur Conan Doyle is better than George Bernard Shaw....."and I am unanimous in that!"
