I blame the hippies, Anna - if it wasn't for all that "Aquarius" nonsense back in the late 60s/early 70s I daresay most people wouldn't have heard of Nostradamus at all. Whilst the occasional book on Nosty had been published over the years, the big explosion in popularity came in 1972/73 with the publication of Erika Cheetham's bestselling "The Prophecies of Nostradamus". This is still in print and seems still to be selling well. I think it tapped into the whole trippy zeitgeist of the time and now we're stuck with it, or at least for as long as that generation and their children are still around.

    Hi all,
So,according to these posts,we think this guy is a fake??

Why has his name lived on through history.I'd have thought others would have debunked his work some time ago??

Not that I think he is right...just curious to find out why people think he has still got the reputation he has.

    ANNA.

The first two verses are considered a self-portrayal of Nostradamus.

Note that Pythia, the priestess presiding over the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, took her seat at a tripod to deliver her prophecies.

Some kind of ritual purification probably. Immersion in water is a form of purification form in Judaism.

The Christian deity or the spirit of the prophecy?

    Hello Mac!

The wand in the hand is placed in the middle of the tripod's legs.
(No girl around, so I just have to ****)
With water he sprinkles both the hem of his garment and his foot.
    (oh-oh, my sheets are dirty!)
A voice, fear: he trembles in his robes.
(A terrible dream; must have had a few drinks too much last night!)
Divine splendor; the God sits nearby.
(A very tasty joint, had a nice trip!)

    All the best
    Jukka

    Hello Mac!

Here comes the beginning of Century I:

    1
    Sitting alone at night in secret study;
it is placed on the brass tripod.
A slight flame comes out of the emptiness and
makes successful that which should not be believed in vain.

    2
The wand in the hand is placed in the middle of the tripod's legs.
With water he sprinkles both the hem of his garment and his foot.
A voice, fear: he trembles in his robes.
Divine splendor; the God sits nearby.

    3
When the litters are overturned by the whirlwind
and faces are covered by cloaks,
the new republic will be troubled by its people.
At this time the reds and the whites will rule wrongly.

    4
In the world there will be made a king
who will have little peace and a short life.
At this time the ship of the Papacy will be lost,
    governed to its greatest detriment.

    5
They will be driven away for a long drawn out fight.
The countryside will be most grievously troubled.
Town and country will have greater struggle.
Carcassonne and Narbonne will have their hearts tried.

    6
The eye of Ravenna will be forsaken,
when his wings will fail at his feet.
The two of Bresse will have made a constitution
for Turin and Vercelli, which the French will trample underfoot

I have my own (tongue-in-cheek, I have to say! ) interpretation of this, how about yours?

    All the best
    Jukka

(PS. I couldn't add, that I personally find E.A.Poe's "Raven" in his secret study a lot more interesting!)

Of course they do. I also believe that most 'world leaders' are in some way mentally deranged, I think they have to be to want to do the job they do. Any one of Noseydamebus' quatrains could be made to fit anything. Even the No 1 Bus to the city centre having a puncture on a wednesday afternoon can be predicted.

watched it on you tube a few weeks ago ,not that impressed ,it could have been the work of Nostradamus but that does not mean it predicts the future.

Actually it is challenging to invent his quadrains:

There is sorrow in the law and education,

    P.S.

Don't worry Jukka - I don't think, if we have World War III, that Finland would be one of the battlefields. That is, unless Putin decides there are small parts of the country with large enclaves of Byelorussians in it.
