  • After Careful Consideration

    After careful consideration
    I have concluded that
    All the Whitechapel Murders
    Were committed by a cat.

He left out a by a house
    A tormented cadaver
Just like a cat leaves a mouse
By the door of its master.

Presented as gifts were the bodies
After a cat that'd prowled and caught twice,
To assure us just how much he loves us
And tells us it tastes 'very nise'.

    And to prove that I
    Talk no cryptic riddles,
I give the name of the cat
    It was Tiddles.

    (Sorry I couldn't resist )

I feel you must be right.
          Our mighty moggy, Monty,
          Goes hunting every night.

He has 'em home for supper
          Then shows his deadly claws.
Bits of beak and fur and tail
          Are all that's left indoors.

I might have thought it nature
          That got into our cat,
          Until I caught him writing
"Ha ha dear boss, take that!"

One of Ted Hughes' better efforts, I always thought.
