Good luck with it John, it sounded intresting when you discussed it on the podcast and I will be pre-ordering a copy from Amazon. In fact, I am suprised they have not emailed me to tell me it's on the way!

I'm not a Londoner, don't know London all that well, but have visited the East End on a few occasions, both for pleasure and business. I think I'll be buying your book - it has every promise of being a damn good read.

By the way, I too am descended from Huguenots on my mother's side. Her ancestors scarpered out of Ypres when things got too hot for them, and their first place of settlement in England was, as it happens, Whitechapel, where they set up as silk-weavers. In the early 19th century they de-camped to Worcestershire, reasons unknown. My mother's maiden-name was Diaper, which is a corruption of d'Ypres.

That was one of the errors in the biog bit. I am descended from Sephardic Jews but not Huguenots, though I have ancestors who were Spitalfields silk weavers. But Robinson is not a Huguenot name! Hardly frnch!

Yes, I was actually thinking about the problems of being descended from both the Sephardim and the Huguenots....

Just a little bit more info about my family, after they left the East End for Worcestershire they became manufacturers of gloves. Maybe not too far removed from weaving silk, and probably a lot more profitable. They were all (in living memory) rather puritanical, dour people - which I'm happy to say hasn't been passed down to me, as I sit here typing with a bottle of decent Californian Cabernet to keep me company...
