  • Sergeant Cork

    Hi all,

I'm after some info on a book I bought in a Beverley antique book shop.

Its called Sergeant Cork Casebook 2 and is about a fictitious Victorian policeman of the same name. The book stems from a BBC series in the mid 60s and is akin to the Barlow and Watt style.

Now I think I recall Stewart, Don, or someone stating a belief Sergeant Cork was very loosely based on Sergeant Thick, however please don't quote me on that, its possible I'm very wrong.

Anyway, any info shall be gratefully received.

    Cheers
    Monty

    Hi Monty

I remember this programme being on, but it was ITV not BBC.

I've just read that it was nicknamed H Cabs (as opposed to Z Cars).

      Apologies,

You are correct Robert. As Captain Mainwaring says, I was wondering who'd be the first to spot that.

      Well done

        Hello Monty

Yes I vaguely recall it...it was reasonably entertaining but wasn't exactly "Adam Adamant" status...does that tell you what you need to know?

        All the best

My local library has the complete series on dvd. It's readily available in good dvd shops or online. It's very dated but quite enjoyable.

Not that I give a toss, as it was a crap series, but I'd have said that Sergeant Cork was based upon Jack Whicher, who investigated the celebrated Rode Hill Murder of 1860. Cork, according to the blurb, moved easily between the lowest of the low and the highest of the high, quite like Whicher; whereas Sgt Thicke, bless his unfortunate name, was stuck with the riff-raff of the East End. Let's be honest, someone with a surname like 'Thicke' ain't gonna get on in life....
