No problem Martyn. His name just didn’t ring any bells for me.

Just had a quick dig around at FMP and found 2 PC William Gunners in London in the 1891 Census.

Here's the brief details for those interested:

4, Mountford Street, Whitechapel, London & Middlesex, England

William Gunner, age 24, born Southampton

This seems to be the same William James Gunner, age 14, born Southampton, appearing
with his father, James Gunner, as head of household at
24, Below Bridge, Newton-Toney, Amesbury, Wiltshire, England in the 1881 Census.

His father is listed as being born Crondall, Hampshire and is listed also
      as "Police constable".

      The other PC William Gunner

      Census 1891
Police Station, High Street, Camberwell, London & Surrey, England

William Gunner, age 27, born Whittlesea, Cambridge

It’s not mentioned in the Sourcebook or Sugden (I don’t have the A-Z on Kindle) Of all of the discussions on Stride over the last few years I’ve never seen Gunner mentioned. His name doesn’t even show up on Casebook’s search function. I wonder why we have assumed that this was Ayliff?

FYI See https://www.jtrforums.com/forum/gene...er-street-club, particularly post #4.

I wasn’t being critical Martyn. If my post gave you that impression I’m sorry. Sometimes when I re-read posts I do sometimes see that they can be read to sound abrupt but that wasn’t my intention.

No, Herlock, I didn't think that all. We're cool!

So just to clarify, in your opinion, it is a settled matter who PC Lamb sent and if so who?

I'm curious in case there is something for me to research or not eg as the questions I posted re PC Gunner.

Also I wonder what the new A-Z will say on this...Have heard anything about when it may be published btw?

I asked Debra Arif but she couldn’t give me a date. It’s a hefty work in progress of course.

You might want to have a look at this thread if you haven’t already Martyn re-Gunner.

Lately, trying to find information about some of the people who were at the club that night, I've been reading the article in Ripperologist 129 by Lynn Cates (The Berner Street Club), Murder and Murder: The Fruits of Today’s Society in Ripperologist 152, the casebook thread 'Arbeter Fraint's Take' and I have reread the chapter

I think it’s well written Paddy and I’d say that Hyams is one of those suspects that are worthy of consideration and further research.

For any non-UK posters there’s a chain of shops over here called The Works that sells remaindered, cut price books, stationary and art materials. I went into my local one today and noticed that they were selling One-Armed Jack for just £8. A bit sad for the author that it’s available half price so soon but good news for anyone considering buying. A bargain at that price.

I'm reading that now and paid full price.

Yeah, I paid full price too. I was a bit surprised to see how quickly the works had it on sale for half price. I wonder if the author knows?

                              Yeah, I hope not!

You'd be gutted if you poured your heart and soul into writing a book, and it was spotted just months later in The Works bargain bin.

Edit: It's a decent book about a decent suspect, so probably worth the £8.

If I sound a little underwhelmed, it's just because suspect books (with a couple of notable exceptions) generally have that effect on me.

I grow weary of "that incident occurred just round the corner from where Hyam Hyam's second cousin twice removed lived ten years earlier" and "if the wind blew in a particular direction Hyam Hyam's may have reacted in a certain way" etc etc......

                              Blah! Blah! Blah!

                              You take my point!

I do. There’s often a tendency to exaggerate and imagine. The recent one about Endacott was a case in point. I really pick and choose these days because most are poor. Years ago I was buying everything I could lay my hands on (or afford) One of the best ones was Helen Wojtczac’s book on Chapman. That was being sold off cheaply recently. She was advertising them herself on here. Worth a go if you haven’t already read it. She doesn’t go to hard on Chapman as the ripper but it’s a really well researched book.
