    Episode #9 - Stan Russo

    Hi all,

Episode #9 of Rippercast will feature special guest Stan Russo.

He's the author of, most recently, 2006's The 50 Best Movies for the Movie Fan. Also, Stan has written The 50 Most Significant Individuals in Recorded History, The Jack the Ripper Suspects: 70 Persons Cited by Investigators and Theorists and articles in the Ripper periodicals. Read one such article, The Strange Case of Dr. John Hewitt, which appeared in Ripper Notes, here http://www.casebook.org/dissertations/rn-drhewitt.html

We'll discuss all kinds of things with Mr. Russo, so if you have any questions you would like us to pose to him on Sunday's program, send them my way via PM or at rippernet@mac.com.

I only just got around to listening to the episode on Martha Tabram and I noticed a question regarding my presentation about Druitt, specifically about his whereabouts at the time of Tabram's murder. I'll respond to that.

As Jonathan said on the podcast, I did address that on the Druitt episode. We do not know Druitt's whereabouts on exactly the day Tabram was murdered but we do know that he played cricket in Dorset on the weekend before and the weekend after that murder. It is therefore likely that he spent the whole week in Dorset, though we also must remember it was only a 2.5 hour rail journey between London and Bournemouth. If Tabram is a Ripper victim Druitt becomes a significantly less likely suspect, though he is not eliminated.

Personally, I don't consider it likely that Tabram was a Ripper victim. I reached that conclusion long before I had any interest in Druitt as a suspect. Ironically, Tabram's chances of being a victim have actually risen in my estimation since I became interested in Druitt (for reasons that have nothing to do with Druitt) but I still think it most likely she was not. I would put the odds at about a 30-35% chance of Tabram being a Ripper victim.

I hope that answers the question put to me in absentia.

Is that stronger than Absinthe, Andy?
        If so, I want some.

          Hi Andy,

I almost ventured but shied away from putting words in your mouth re: your opinion on how Tabram as a Ripper victim affects Druitt's candidacy. I believe I stated on the podcast that I'd let you speak for yourself on the matter, so thanks for addressing that here.

                    • That was an incredibly enjoyable podcast, which one really didn't want to end to be honest! An interesting theory as well...

Do you by any chance know what the total number of downloads have been for the podcasts so far? I used to be on Casebook years ago, but not the message boards - just reading the dissertations more than anything, then sort of drifted away from the case in recent years. Only by chance when I was in the Itunes store a few weeks ago, I used the search engine in the podcast section, typed in "ripper", and came across this one. There could be quite a few "non forum" guys discovering the podcast through this way as well.

Anyway, already looking forward to the next one,
                      Yatish

                      • Hi Yatish,

As far as I know there is no counter to tell us how many shows have been downloaded, Jonathon Menges might know though.

The show was a good one, Stan Russo and Paul Begg are so passionate, Jonathon, Howard, Robert and I were just happy to listen to their debate!!

I am glad you enjoyed the show, we have some really good stuff lined up, I am very excited about the show coming up this sunday!!
                        Regards Mike

                        • Dear Yatish:

Thanks for the nice remarks ! Glad to see you back on Casebook

We've done 9 episodes ( 9 unpaid episodes over here,Yatish...like working with Simon Legree with an abcessed tooth and erectile dysfunction ) in all...and I would think that they all are still downloadable. They sound very good on discs, too. Even though I am working with amateurs, don't they sound rather good?

This is good news you bring, since you "accidentally" found out about the program by typing in "ripper". When you type in " unpaid proletarian dupe", only my name appears.

I'm going to mention the program in an ad I have placed in the next MENSA bulletin ( Don't ask who I had to shtup in order to get in with those cats...) which will be seen by potentially 100,000 eggheads.

Media mogul Menges has Mike Covell wearing a sandwich board in Hull, while Robert Mclaughlin is out on the tiles with Jehovahs Witnesses ( strength in numbers or some such theory he has ) in Alberta,Canada going door to door proselytizing the Word of Whitechapel to the heathen civilian masses.

Thanks again for the nice remarks

                          How

                          • Episode #10- The Thames Torso Murders

                            Hi all,

The subject of Episode 10 of the Jack the Ripper podcast will be the discoveries of female torsos and body parts in London that are popularly referred to as the Thames Torso Murders. We're very pleased to have as our special guest for this episode, researcher Debra Arif.

If you have any questions or comments you would like addressed on this topic, please get them to us no later than Sunday, 20 April, by 2pm USEST, or 6pm in the UK.

Thanks for listening to the show as we get into the double-digits!

                            • Mike & Howard,

It's good to hear such a broad base of personalities and opinions on the show - it keeps a really nice balance. And even the "debate" last Sunday was a lot more civil than the way in which some threads here tend to escalate towards
Amazing what happens when there is a more "human" element towards a conversation

What also fascinated me was Stan's theory, particularly when he mentioned about who he thought the GSG was aimed at (3 people), and also the one specific person in "high" society who JK and WS had a specific hatred towards (I thought you were itching to guess, Jonathan!). Is he planning to reveal these names in an upcoming book, or are they widely known amongst these boards?

Thanks guys, and I'll have a drink tonight to the "unpaid proletarian dupe(s)"!

                              Yatish

                              • Hi Yatish,

We're planning to have Stan back on a Sickert suspect show. How much of his theory he'll reveal is up to him since, yes, he has a book he's working on. It may in fact be finished. I believe that because of this there is plenty that Stan is holding back.

My off-the-cuff guess would have been Anderson, and I would have been wrong, I'm sure of it. Stan said on the show that I would not have guessed the high placed person, and since Anderson is already a part of the Royal Conspiracy lore, my guess would have been the obvious one I think.

We're excited to have Debra Arif on this weekend. So much so that I'm buying a new headset, which will make it #4. I think you'll find that over the next few months our topics will vary widely, which is what we wanted.

As you may know, Yatish, iTunes no longer updates its podcast page for us due to a broken RSS feed that will not be fixed for a few months. I'm glad you were able to figure out how to find us at our site and subscribe from there.

                                Thanks for your feedback
