it's how the name was Anglicised GUT. He became naturalised didn't he at some point.

I believe so, just find it a little strange that he signed it that way.

well..

i guess like many immigrants he wanted to fit in and be like the indiginous population, so making his name less 'foreign sounding' was probably something he wanted to do.

His signature in post #32 by Paddy and the one above by Jon look different. What's going on?

They do rather. For one thing, the later signature is tidier. I thought time and ageing usually brought untidiness.
