So glad you find it endearing, Gary. Did Frederick MacKenzie mention the Austin murder? No. If the article was prompted by her murder, you'd think it would have been mentioned by him, or referenced in the follow-up speech by McCarthy.

Your problem is you try to read between the lines too much. I like to take things a bit more literally.

You'll forgive me if I question remarkable transformation in a few short years, from McCarthy, the slum landlord of 1888, to McCarthy, Esq., the landowner, sports promoter and entrepreneur from before then and into the twentieth century.

The McCarthy who owned multiple lodging houses probably was and he was also the one who attended Abberline's retirement. I contend that this man wasn't the Miller's Court rent collector.

The Austin murder had taken place a few weeks before McCarthy made his speech and the attack had occurred on the 35, Dorset Street premises of McCarthy’s mate Bill Crossingham. Crossingham was in the audience when McCarthy spoke. It was almost certainly what motivated Fred Mackenzie to write his ‘Worst Street’ article.

The Wiki entry has mixed up two different McCarthys. Information garnered from Fiona Rule's book should be viewed cautiously.
