Given that Lawende did actually testify against 'a fellow Jew' at a murder trial in 1876, surely that would rule him out.

I reckon Anderson's witness may have existed but his account of said witness identification was hugely embellished and manipulated, borne of ego and prejudice.

Maybe, maybe not. We don't have specific information about the identification, except for confirmation that it happened -- Swanson and (possibly) Sagar.
