Which witness got a closer look? Long.

Which witness saw their suspect in better light? Long.

Long said she did not see the man's face.

She said she saw him from behind, which means that she could not even say whether he wore a neckerchief.

Lawende saw the man's face and noted that he had a fair moustache and wore a reddish neckerchief.

Long could not say what colour the man's coat was; Lawende described the man's coat as pepper-and-salt.

It is obvious that Lawende had a better look.

Which witness hadn't just been to a pub/club? Long.

Since there is no evidence as to whether either witness had recently drunk alcohol, your point is irrelevant.

If Long was an alcoholic, she may have drunk alcohol before leaving home that morning.

Even if the Imperial Club served alcohol, that does not mean that Lawende necessarily drank any with his meal.

Which witness got a closer look? A woman who walked next to the man or a man across the street. You go for the one further away. Ok.

I notice that you left out the fact that Long saw her couple in daylight whereas Lawende saw his couple at night.

I never said that he was drunk or that there was absolute proof that he’d had a drink but if he’d spent the evening in a club then it’s entirely reasonable to suggest that he might have had a drink. He might have had one pint….he might have had 6 pints for all that we know. So it’s an unknown…not an irrelevance. I can’t say that he’d had a drink and you have no evidence that he hadn’t. So we have to assume that both are equally possible. It’s 50-50.

      • People did not drink six pints of beer at kosher dining clubs.

You are displaying the lack of understanding - of the differences between the Jewish and Gentile communities at that time - to which I have referred.

Can you provide your evidence that no drinks were available at the club that Lawende and co attended please. Or if drinks were available, the evidence that Lawende didn’t partake.

It was not a public house.

It was not a pub/club, as you put it.

People did not go there to drink.

            It was a dining club.

At the risk of repeating myself…..and the evidence that it was only a dining club and that it didn’t serve alcohol is?

This advertisement was posted on here in 2008 by the late Chris Scott. It says that the club was run on the principles of the West End clubs which, as we know, served alcohol. The difference at The Imperial being that naturally the food was Kosher.

People didn't go to such a club to down six pints of beer, as you suggested.

Ok. So you’ve now changed position from “People did not go there to drink,” to the above.

And so as you’ve provided no evidence that members couldn’t get a drink at the Imperial Club and I’ve provided evidence that they could. Perhaps you could now provide the evidence to back up your claim to know how much a member might or might not drink there?
                    Regards

I have not changed my position:

People did not drink six pints of beer at kosher dining clubs. (# 423)

People didn't go to such a club to down six pints of beer, as you suggested. (# 428).

This is only your opinion. What are you basing that opinion on? Can you provide evidence to back it up? I can’t really believe that I’m asking this question PI because you clearly can’t have evidence.

If you went to a Kosher restaurant, you would not see people drinking pints of beer.

Your challenge is not a valid one.

It is rather like asking someone to prove that people don't go to vegan restaurants to get drunk.

But this wasn’t a kosher restaurant was it? It was set up like a West End club (as it said in the newspaper article)

So my question is entirely valid; which I’ll repeat…..can you provide proper evidence that Joseph Lawende hadn’t been drinking? I can’t prove that he had (which I’ll openly concede), but I’ve never claimed that he had, only that there’s an entirely reasonable possibility that he might have been.

Kosher restaurants often have a wine menu, with beer and spirits available too.

Obviously excessive drinking is not encouraged but booze is certainly readily available.

What would be your estimation of the probability of someone going there and drinking six pints of bitter?
