  • Elizabeth Prater

    Hi All,

    Old Bailey, January 1889—

(Police Constable 354 H) produced and proved plans of the house 26, Dorset Street, where the occurrence took place.

DAVID ROBERTS. I am by trade a painter and decorator, of 26 Dorset Street, Spitalfields—on November 26th [1888] I was living there, in the first-floor back room, with my wife, the deceased woman [Eliza Roberts], and her sister, the prisoner [Kate Marshall]—they carried on the same business of whip-making—we had all been living together in the same room for some time . . . I have lived in that room with my wife about seven months—we had been married fifteen or sixteen years—the eldest child is fifteen—we lived together twelve months before we were married . . .

CHARLES AMORY. I am a wire-worker, and on November 26th [1888] I was living at 26 Dorset Street, in the first floor front room—two women, named Mary Johnson and Annie Jackson, were also living in the same room.

The front and back first floor rooms are separated "by a passage and a spare room, which is used at nights to put lodgers with their children in . . ."

    Where did Elizabeth Prater live?

    Regards,

    Simon

That's a very interesting post, Simon. It's new to me. Has it been discussed before? And why is 'Annie Jackson' ringing a bell?

    Yours truly,

    Tom Wescott

      Hi Simon, Tom.
Here's one of the many previous discussions on this subject:

Discussion of the numerous "witnesses" who gave their testimony either to the press or the police during the murder spree.

Simon-the date of the trial should be January 1899

Thanks, Debs. But you can't expect each of us to remember every thread ever created. But after reading this, I do recall having popped in on it when it was active. Seemed at that time no consensus had been reached. But it looks to me as though Prater lived in one of the back rooms facing the court, as argued by Stewart.

        Yours truly,

        Tom Wescott

P.S. Annie Jackson = Elizabeth Jackson?

No, but it doesn't hurt to google a topic now and again, maybe?
I just linked to this one as it was one of the better discussion I thought and there's a lot of good information posted on there.

Yeah...cos there was only ever one girl named Jackson in the world...

Annie Jackson = Elizabeth Jackson = Janet Jackson, Tom.

Thanks for the vintage thread, Debs.
              Best regards,
              Maria

Hello Debs. Would you prefer, "Totally awesome!" (heh-heh)

I'm not a big fan of 'my bad' either, though I confess it occassionally slips from my lips or fingers. British people have a much more interesting way of speaking than us Yanks. We're not as funny and creative with it. It's almost worth pissing Debs off as much as I do to see how she'll choose to express her anger at me. It cracks me up every time.

                            Hi Tom

No, the argument was about whether Prater lived in a specific room overlooking the court ie the one directly above Kelly. This was an accepted fact until 3 years ago based on her inquest statement. Then Sam Flynn unearthed a whole heap of contemporary news reports that together show quite clearly that her room was at the front of #26 overlooking Dorset Street, She says so herself. One shouldn't argue against the unarguable I'd say.

                            Hi Debra

Yes, 'my bad' is a pretty gruesome phrase isn't it?

But it might actually be useful in socialising small children.
